Grates. - A cleaning device for travelling grates consists of a bar h, Fig. 1, adapted to strike against the grate bars f at intervals and given an axial reciprocatory motion so as to set up a shaking motion of the grate bars. The bar h is mounted on a pair of double levers a pivoted on universal joints b, c and provided with a pin i which is held against cam surfaces on a rotating wheel k by a spring d, so that the bar h is given a reciprocating motion. The grate bars f engage a roller e on the lever a and force the lever back against the action of the spring d. As the grate bars pass the roller, the lever is released and the bar h strikes the grate bars and serves with its reciprocatory motion to clear the ashes &c. The bar h may be so actuated that the grate bars are not forcibly struck. A curved disc mounted on the spindle of the grate drum g may be employed to engage with the roller e and force back the lever a. A modified form of the cleaning device comprises a reciprocating rod t, Fig. 4, on which are mounted members u resting against the grate bars f. Projections v, w on the members u and rod t respectively allow a limited oscillatory movement of the members. The rod t is provided at one end with a screw thread adapted to engage with a thread in an oscillating arm driven from the grate driving mechanism or directly so as to give to the rod t a reciprocating motion.
