Cooling charges; gases, supplying. - In an annealing-furnace in which the charge 1 is heated in an atmosphere of inert gas the charge is cooled, on the termination of the heating process, by a thermo-syphon circulation of the inert gas through the furnace 2 and a cooler 6, valves 5, 5a in the gas outlet V inlet pipes 4, 8 being kept closed until the annealing temperature is reached. The cooler 6, which may take the form of a second cold furnace, is provided with a drip-pipe 7 for taking off condensed vapours.
