Pneumatic dispatch apparatus. - Means for automatically reducing or stopping the flow of air through, a pneumatic dispatch system when no transmission is being effected comprise a cylinder 5 communicating with the dispatch tube 4 through a port 9, and fitted at its lower end with a hinged valve 6 adapted to be opened by gravity when no carrier is in the tube 4. A valve 11. sleeved on an axial tube 12 in the cylinder 5. carries a disc 10 at its lower end, and when air admitted by the opened valve 6 raises the disc 10, the valve 11 is adapted to cover ports 13 in the tube 12 and shut off communication between the tube 4 and the upper side of an annular piston 14 fitting in the cylinder 5. The upper part of the cylinder 5 is connected through an adjustable bleed-valve 17 with a suction-pipe 19, so that when the parts 13 are closed the piston 14 rises at a. rate determined by the setting of the valve 17. Near the top of its stroke, the piston 14 engages a cross-bar 20 fixed on a rod in the tube. 12 and attached to the valve 6, which is thus closed. The sleeve valve 11 then falls to open the ports 13 and allow the piston 14 to fall. A disc 31 on the sleeve 11 fits in an inverted dash-pot 30, so that the sleeve. 11 shall not fall during the time for which the flow of air is interrupted in the tube. 4 by the discharge of a carrier, although the longer time required for inserting another carrier in the tube 4 allows the sleeve 11 to fall and reset the control mechanism. In pneumatic tubes of great length, the time during which the piston 14 rises may be extended by an auxiliary piston attached to the lower end of the control cylinder valve rod and working in an oil dash-pot. In a modified construction, adapted to link up two tubes 4 and admit air to the tube in use, the open end of the control cylinder is connected to the tubes by a two-way box, on the underside of which are arranged side by side the inlets for the carriers. Ports inside the box connect the tubes with the air supply, and a swing flap valve, operated by a forked lever carried on a vertical spindle, is adapted to close one or other of the ports, the forked lever being actuated by projections on the hinged closing doors of the tubes. The flap valve is biassed to either side of the centre line so that it will remain on its seat when thrown over.
