Abstract

Coating bakers' and confectioners' goods. - In a machine for coating edible cores with a covering material such as chocolate, the cores are automatically gripped by and held in continuous contact with two spaced conveyers whilst passing through the coating material. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the cores 4 are fed to the machine by a conveyer band 5 and are passed through a vessel 1 containing the coating material 2 which is fed by an orifice 13 mounted on a side wall 3 of the machine and connected by a pump to a collecting vessel 12. A horizontal shaft 7 carries discs 8 having toothed or roughened peripheries. engaging a closed conveyer band 6, preferably made of wire lattice, and between the discs 8 are arranged similar but smaller discs 9. The cores are positively but lightly held between the band 6 and the discs 9, and the shaft 7 is adjustable vertically to accommodate cores of different sizes and also according as the cores are to be coated completely or only over the lower portions. The coated cores then pass below an air nozzle 14 and, during or after reversal by the lower side of a closed band 22, below one or more air nozzles 25 arranged inside or beyond the band 22. To accommodate cores of different sizes the speed of the band 22 is variable, the frame 15 of the band is vertically adjustable, and a roller 20 may be moved along a slot 23 to adjust its distance from a roller 19. The band 6 then discharges the cores on to a conveyer band 26 comprising flexiblyconnected rods provided with outwardly projecting pins or the like 27. Fig. 2 shows a reversing device for use when the cores are coa.ted on one side only. The cores 4 are discharged on to a solid or disc roller 28 provided with a covering of the coated material, the thickness of which is regulated by an adjustable stripper 29, and then tipped over by an adjustable horizontal wire 30 on to a conveyer band 32 with the coated sides of the cores uppermost. In a modified form shown in Fig. 4 the discs 9 serve merely as auxiliaries to, or are completely replaced by, a conveyer band 33 which is so guided that it hangs loosely down and bears lightly on the cores before, during, and after coating. After passing below an air nozzle 14 the, coated cores are then reversed and retained in position by a loosely hanging conveyer band 36 and subjected to air currents from upper and lower angularly arranged nozzles 42, 45 and to a weaker air current from a further nozzle 43. In order to reverse the cores a sharp angular kink may be formed in the conveyer band 6 between rollers 50, 51 by means of a roller 49 which may be lowered at will by two pivoted levers 48. The cores are finally discharged on to the conveyer band 26 by means of an intermediate vertically adjustable conveyer band 46 which may also be reciprocated vertically. For this purpose the band 46 is carried by a frame 53 which is supported by a pivoted arm 59 and a rod 61 pivoted to a pivotally mounted lever 62 adjusted by a screw 65, the rod 61 being adjustably connected by a bolt 66 to the connecting rod 67 of an eccentric 68 driven by a pulley 70. The frame 53 carries sockets 71 for detachably housing a device fitted with transverse wires or the like for the removal of superfluous coating material from the lower surfaces of the cores.
