Abstract

269,977. Koningsveld, M. van, and Ever Ready Co. (Great Britain), Ltd. Jan. 27, 1926. Cells; electrodes.-A battery is made up of a number of superimposed cells each of which comprises a container 10 the walls of which are of impervious non-conducting material such as ebonite &c., the bottom 12 being of zinc &c. and constituting the anode of the cell below. Each plate 12 is covered with a layer 18 of impervious conducting material such as a mixture of graphite and a binding medium such as linseed oil, gold size or celluloid solution above which is the depolarizing mixture 28 such as manganese dioxide and graphite. Above the layer 28 is the electrolvte 30 which mav be in the form of a jelly or paste or of a slab of bibulous material soaked in the electrolyte. Each zinc plate 12 is formed with a tongue 20 which projects through a notch in the lower edge of the container and is connected to a terminal or plug socket, not shown. The upper and lower edges of the containers are also provided with notches 26, 24, as shown in Fig. 2, through which surplus electrolyte escapes when the cells are first assembled. After this surplus has been removed the cells are turned to bring the notches 26, 24 slightly out of alignment, or in the case of non-circular cells, the notches are simply plugged. The completed battery is then sealed in an outer case.
