268,923. Victaulic Co., Ltd., Johnson, P. G., and Morgan, H. R. Feb. 12, 1926. Addition to 234,863. Cup-leather joints; branches and mains, connecting; plates &c., jointing pipes to.-Fluid-tightness between a branch pipe or fitting 2 and a main 3 is secured by means of the hollow packing ring 5 of flexible material which is described in the parent Specification, the two free edges or lips 5<a>, 5<b> of said ring contacting with the surface of the branch and main pipes respectively. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the branch is screwed into the main and the packing ring is enclosed in a housing 4 which is retained in position by a flange 6 on the branch. Access of fluid to the ring 5 is provided by holes 7 in the branch pipe. Alternatively, the branch 2 enters freely into a hole 8 in the main, Fig. 3, and is held therein by the packing housing which is attached to the main by a strap 9 and bears against a split ring 6 sprung into an annular groove formed in the branch pipe. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the end of the branch pipe is reduced and also formed with oppositely disposed projections 2<a>, so that by tilting the branch its end can be passed through the hole 8 and the projection caused to engage the inner surface of the main. The branch is retained in this position by a nut 2b screwed thereon and adapted to bear against the packing housing. Specification 149,381 is also referred to.
