Cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments and films from. - Tlireads, filaments, bands or films made from solutions of cellulose derivatives, such as cellulose esters and ethers, by coagulation in aqueous liquids, are obtained in a polished and transparent condition without further treatment by employing for the preparation of the solution an anhydrous solvent or mixture of solvents and a cellulose derivative which has been well dehydrated. Suitable solvents are absolute methyl or ethyl alcohol whether camphorated or not, and dry acetone; the coagulating bath may be water, aqueous solutions of alcohol or other solvent, or a salt solution such as a solution of calcium chloride or sodium nitrate, and it is preferred to use the bath at a low temperature, for instance at 4-10‹ C. Plasticizers or other additions may be made to the solution of the cellulose derivative. In an example, a film is made by applying a solution in dry acetone of well dehydrated nitrocellulose to a polished wheel wholly or partly immersed in water at 4‹ C.
