Abstract

266,557. Kruckenberg, F., and Stedefeld, C. April 9, 1926. Energy - absorbing elements; acting on flat sides of wheels; skid.-In a braking airangement for cars of true streamline form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, for high-speed suspension railways, for braking the cars at high speed air brakes are provided for increasing the air resistance and producing energy-absorbing turbulence in the slip stream and the air screw 10 is reversible, while for braking at low speeds, friction brakes acting on the running wheels and rail brakes, serving also as emergency brakes, are provided. In one form, the air brakes comprise hinged plates 1, 2, Fig. 2, curved externally to conform with the streamline shape of the car and adapted to be turned outwards by levers, handwheels, &c. to uncover hollow spaces with curved inner walls 3. 4. Air intercepted by the opened plates 1, 2 is directed inwards and meets the walls 3, 4 by which it is directed outwards behind the plates across the already turbulent air streams which are therebv widened. In another form, channels 5, 6, Fig. 3, in the nose of the car have sliding cover plates 7, 7<1>, 8, 8<1> which may be opened allowing air streams to enter the channels from which they are ejected sideways across the slip stream, thus producing turbulence. Vanes 9 are provided at the channel exits. The reversal of the air screw may be effected by using a screw of reversible pitch, by the use of a reversible motor, or, as shown in Fig. 1. by the use of a reversing gear 13 a clutch 11 on the shaft of the motor 14 being first disengaged. the screw shaft then braked by a brake 12. and the gear 13 reversed, so that when the clutch 11 is re-engaged. the screw 10 is driven backwards. When the effectiveness of the air brakes has diminished with decrease in speed of the car, friction brakes 15 acting axially upon the sides of the running wheels are brought into action, their effectiveness being increased by the provision of counter wheels drawn upwards against the rail 19 by springs which come into action during braking. The rail brakes comprise shoes 17, 18 guided laterally in frames and pressed against the rail 19 by suitable mechanism. Specification 27549/96, [Class 103, Railway &c. vehicles], is referred to.
