Balancing by means of weights.-Super-charging is effected by a piston which moves in synchronism with the power piston on the suction and compression strokes, and remains stationary during the expansion and exhaust strokes. As shown in Fig. 2 an independent pump piston 26 is driven by a cam 33 on a half speed shaft, the piston rod being held up to the cam by a spring 34 between a fixed abutment 36 and a collar 35 on the rod. This piston works in a chamber 25 communicating with the power chamber through a port 27. At the end of the compression stroke the pump piston covers this port. A weight 39 is used to balance the weight of the cam. According to the Provisional Specification the supercharging piston may be placed in an extension of the power cylinder and driven from a cam rotated at half speed by sprocket gear. This piston is stationary during the power and exhaust strokes.
