Abstract

266,059. Alma, M., and Alma, C. E. Nov. 19, 1925. Combined buffer and draw-gear for a vehicle in which the draw-bar is in two, parts connected by a muff into which the ends can slide is provided with spring coupling means connecting the two halves of the draw-bar which comprises a muff 43 in which the ends of the two parts of the draw-bar 32 are inserted through sliding sleeves 50 each of which abuts a spring bearing plate 49, and a stop 45 secured by a nut 53 on the end of the draw-rod. Tie rods 101 connect a spring plate 100 on each half of the draw-bar, springs 48 being housed between the spring plates 100 and 49 and surrounding either the draw-bar or tie rods. Further springs 34, 39 on each half of the draw-bar are provided with bearing plates 33, 35, and 38, 40, which work between the stops g, h, and i, j, fixed on the underframe, the springs being compressed by means of sleeves 109, 36, 106 on the drawbar. In buffing, the spring 39 is first compressed and then the spring 34, and simultaneously with the compression of the spring 39 the spring 48 is compressed and the force transmitted through the muff 43 to compress the other spring 48, which, through the fixed sleeve 32, transmits the force to the other half of the draw-bar 32, and thence to its springs 39, 34. In buffing from both ends of the vehicle, all the springs are compressed until the nuts 53 inside the muff abut, when the remaining part of the buffing force is taken by the rods 32 direct. When under draft the springs 39 and then 34 are compressed and simultaneously with the compression of the spring 39 the sleeve 50 moves forwardly to compress the spring 48 against the plate 100 which, through the tie rods 101 and the other plate 100, compresses the spring 48 on the other half of the draw-bar which forces the sleeve 50 inwardly and compresses the remaining springs 39, 34. When under draft from both ends of the vehicle, the springs are compressed until the stops 45 on each half of the draw-bar abut the ends of the muff 43, which, together with the draw-bar, then takes the remaining draft strains. In a modification one end of the muff is rigidly attached to one end of the draw-bar. The springs may be attached to only one half of the draw-bar. Play may be provided between the sleeve 103 and the bearing plate 100, or the sleeve 50 projects out of the muff 43; clearance may be provided between the nuts 102 and bearing plate 100 so that the springs 48 may come into operation after the springs 39, 34.
