Abstract

Piles.-In a method of making piles of compressed concrete, a boring tube is sunk, the water sucked up from the tube and from the adjacent strata, and the tube filled with concrete to about half its height, the concrete being then subjected to pressure. The removal of the water is preferably carried out by means of an ejector, and air under pressure is introduced into the body of the concrete. The tube 1 is sunk, and an ejector 2 is introduced. The suction tube 3 of the latter is provided with a row of apertures and ends in a point, and is driven into the ground below the bottom of the tube 1. Several suction pipes may be used. A pipe 6, Fig. 2, having apertures 7 is then introduced which passes through a stutfing-box in a cover 10 secured to the tube 1. Concrete sufficient to fill about half the tube is introduced through a second pipe 8, which extends nearly to the bottom of the tube. Air under pressure is then admitted through the pipe 6. The air passes up through the concrete and assists the latter is settle down and prevents the formation of cavities. The pile is completed by raising the tube 8 and introducing more concrete, or by filling up the open tube, after which pressure is applied as before.
