Abstract

265,196. Gottlieb, M., [Firm of], (Assignees of Bergl, K.). Jan. 30, 1926, [Convention date]. Syringes.-A surgical'syringe in which liquid is forced from a container under gas pressure comprises an aluminium or other container 1, of oval section and of capacity about a quarter of a litre, having a filling aperture 3 in an internaliy flanged socket 2. A closing member 8, bored to receive a conical valve 10 is screwed into the socket 2, a rubber ring 25 making an air-tight joint being provided. The member 8 is provided with a nozzle 12 carrying a flexible tube 19, and with lateral apertures 24 registering with apertures 5 in the socket 8. The valve 10 has a stem 10<a> projecting above the member 8 and provided with a cap 18. A rubber tube 13 surrounding the valve 10 is secured at one end by a nut 14 and at the other by clamping the turned-over end between the member 8 and a cap 17. The tube 13 provides a fluid-tight packing, a stuffing-box and a tensioning means for the valve 10. Chemicals generating gas in contact with water e.g. a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and tartaric acid, are contained in a cylindrical aluminium cartridge 6 closed by thin displaceable diaphragms and supported in the socket 8 by a flange 7. To the tube 19 is attached a porcelain, vulcanite or bakelite nozzle 22 having longitudinal ribs 22<a> and a terminal and lateral apertures. In use. the container 1 is filled with water and, the members 6 and 8 being secured in position, the chemicals in the cartridge 6 are transferred to the container by depressing the valve 10. After the gas has been generated the apparatus is inverted; pressure on the valve 10 then releases the liquid in a controllable stream. In a modification the liquid may be made to incorporate one of the gas-generating substances, for example vinegar. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that an excess of tartaric acid may be provided in the cartridge 6, in order to obtain a slightly disinfecting liquid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
