Abstract
264,827. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Jan. 19, 1926, [Convention date]. Cyclic and acyclic hydrocarbons.-Unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as ethylene and acetylene, are obtained by rapidly passing saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as methane, at ordinary or raised pressure over a contact mass consisting of alkaline earth metal salts, or salts, oxides, or hydroxides of magnesium or beryllium, or compounds of selenium, tellurium, or thallium, or active silica or active charcoal, or mixtures thereof, and maintained at a temperature of 700 -1000‹ C., or higher. Provided the gases are quickly removed from the hot reaction zone, acetylene forms the main product at very high temperatures and ethylene at somewhat lower temperatures. Specification 258,608 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes an example according to which methane is converted into acetylene by passing it rapidly through a rock crystal tube containing fragments of magnesia, which is heated in an electric furnace to 900‹ C.: if the speed be reduced, naphthalene and benzene are also formed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
