Closure members, hinged.-A stop valve of the circular flap type is provided with improved means by which the valve plate 2, Figs. 2 and 3, in the opening movement is first raised obliquely from its seating, as shown in Fig. 2, and is then rotated approximately through 90‹ to a position parallel with line of flow, as shown in Fig. 3. This first oblique action is brought about by the lifting action of eccentrics 5a, keyed on the valve spindle 3, which operate in slide blocks 5 slidably engaging guide sockets 4 in guide projections 2a formed on opposite sides of the valve disc: oblique slots 2<c> in the slide blocks 5 control the direction of move. ment. When the position shown in Fig. 2 has been reached, a notch 5b, Fig. 7, in a concentric flange 5<c> of one of the eccentrics 5<a> allows a coupling disc 8<a> to move downwards with its side block 11 so as to couple the valve spindle 3 to the valve disc. A pin 8 on the coupling disc 8<a> is thereby released from the upper end of a curved slot 6<d> in a fixed side plate 6, whereupon a further rotation of the valve stem turns the valve through 90‹ to the position shown in Fig. 3.
