Lateral-splash guards; mudguards. - Lateralsplash guards comprise a resilient protecting element attached to small arms mounted by ball or other bearings to turn within limits on a rod parallel with the element, impact on the element causing it to swing upwards and away from the wheel, the element returning to the normal position by gravity. The guard P comprises an internal frame consisting of a fairly rigid member p, Figs. 3 and 4, of spring steel fitted with a number of flexible steel strips m, this frame being covered with canvas and india-rubber. The guard is secured to arms a pivotally mounted on a. longitudinal rod A which carries notched stop-members b co-operating with pins b on the arms a to limit the swinging movements of the guard. The rod A is carried by spring clips j on lugs c pivoted at d to links D which are pivoted at d<1> to a member H carried by a bolt H<1> secured to the steering swivel. In a modification, the members D are fixed to a support inside the wheel, the pivots d being replaced by members extending around to the outer side of the wheel and carrying links to which are pivoted the clips i for the rod A. Guards may be provided at the inner side and at the front and rear of the wheel. The guards may be suspended from the axle-cap or other suitable part. A peripheral guard G is carried by the same mounting as the splash guards. A shield may be carried between the rod A and the wheel to protect the inner fittings of the guard and an electrical warning device operated by contacts on the arms a may be provided to indicate to the driver the approach of an obstacle. In a modified form the guard proper may be formed in two parts connected by parallel links.
