Joint-making packing. - In packing for pipe joints, covers of vessels and the like of the type comprising a metal ring c expanded by the fluid pressure, the ring is of wedge section and engages inclined seating sur. faces d in such a manner that the seating pressure is increased by the movement of the packing under the influence of the fluid pressure. The axis g-h of the wedge section may be parallel to the vessel to be packed, as shown, or at right angles thereto, the seatings being formed on the opposed surfaces j, k. The ring may be of chemically inert metal.
