Abstract

264,234. Marconi, G., and Franklin, C. S. Oct. 14, 1925. Vacuum tubes.- A valve for generating very short waves has the oscillatory circuit entirely within the valve and the seals for making connection to the anode and grid carry only the anode feed and grid currents respectively. As shown in Fig. 1 the grid G is supported by a metal cone, or strips X lying along the surface of a cone, on a ring O encircling the glass foot W, and the anode A is supported by a metal cylinder, or strips Y lying along a cylindrical surface, on a ring P separated from the ring O by insulation M. The capacity between the rings should be large compared with the capacity between the grid and anode. The oscillatory circuit consists of the capacity between the rings, and between the grid and anode, in series with the inductance of the strips. The rings O, P are connected with seals G S, A S respectively. The valve shown in Fig. 2 has two sets of electrodes, the grids G<1>, G<2> and anodes A<1>, A<2> being connected by metal strips X, Y respectively, connection to the seals being made from the centre points of the strips. The grids and anodes may be supported from the ends of the envelope. Energy is transferred to an external circuit such as a tuned aerial by means of a small condenser in the filament leads on the valve side of chokes, or by electrostatic induction through the envelope; or the aerial may be mounted within the envelope.
