Abstract
264,040. Newman & Sons, Ltd., W., and Newman, H. G. March 25, 1926. Pivoted-window and casement opening and closing apparatus. - A single control member 5, which is adapted to operate several hinged or pivoted windows 1, 2, is operatively connected to one or more of the windows through the medium of rigid link or lever mechanism arranged to give an idle movement and cause the opening of the said window or windows to be delaved as compared with the opening of the other windows. The windows may be horizontally or vertically hinged. The link mechanism for each window is connected to the control rod 5 by means of brackets 8, 22, so that movement of such rod operates the windows. Horizontally hinged windows are shown. The link mechanism for the upper window 1 comprises pivoted links 9, 10 connected respectively to the bracket 8 and to a rotatably mounted horizontal bar 11, and to the latter bar is fixed one of a pair of pivoted links 12, 13, the other link 13 being hinged to the window. The bracket 22 for the lower window 2 carries a roller 17 which is adapted to engage an L-shaped camslot 16 in an arm 15, the upper end of which is fixed to a rotatably mounted horizontal bar 18. An arm 20, also fixed to the bar 18, is pivoted to a link 21, which is hinged to the window 2. The bracket 22 is so adjusted that the roller 17 is situated at the upper end of the slot 16 when both windows are closed. Downward movement of the rod 5 causes the upper window to commence to open, but the lower window does not start to open until the roller 17 reaches the bottom of the vertical barrel of the slot 16. This arrangement allows one window to be opened without actuating the other window. The idle movement may alternatively be produced by a cam. The Provisional Specification also describes the provision of means for allowing the lower window to be fully opened after the upper window has already attained this position. One form of such means comprises a spring surrounding the vertical rod between an abutment and a slidable collar to which is pivoted the lower end of the link extending between the vertical rod and one arm of the upper bell-crank lever, the arrangement being that the spring allows movement of the vertical rod after the upper window is fully open. Another form of such means consists in a particular arrangement of the lower part of the cam slot of the lower window.
