Abstract
263,636. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and Simpson, E. Jan. 18, 1926. Testing hardness of materials.-Relates to apparatus of the type employing a spring- loaded penetration member operatively connected to registering means, the spring opposing the pressure of the specimen, and consists in giving the spring a great initial compression. The lower part of the device is formed as a cylinder 1 which is connected by a stem 3 to a handle 2. Slidably mounted in the cylinder is a piston 4 retained by a spring washer 5 and provided with an extension 6 of small diameter which positions as the penetration member. A flange 7 is adapted to contact with the specimen when the maximum penetration has been achieved. The piston is preferably hollow to provide an anchorage for a compression spring 9, the other end of which is anchored to an abutment 10. In use the device is placed on the vulcanized rubber or like to be tested and pressed into the material until the latter is engaged by the flange 7. The movement of the piston is transferred by engagement of the piston with a pin 16 on a sliding rack 11 and hence to a pinion 13 and pointer 14 moving over a scale. A plate spring 18 retains the rack in the position reached. A spring plunger 19 serves to reset the rack.
