Abstract

262,941. Farrell, D., and Helmholtz, A. W. Dec. 15, 1925. Blasting cartridges and fuzes.-A method of blasting consists in inserting a container into a drill hole, afterwards charging the container with a compressible fluid (such as carbon dioxide) which is not a liquid at atmospheric temperature and pressure, by forcing the fluid into the container from a source of supply under a pressure sufficient to maintain the fluid in liquid form, and finally gasifying the liquid by heating, so as to produce a pressure sufficient to burst the container. The figure shows the apparatus in use, 18 being a tank from which the fluid is forced by a pump 17 through pipes 16, 14 to a cartridge 11 tamped in a drill hole 12. A battery 20 is connected by leads 21, 22 to the heating devices in the cartridge. Two suitable forms of cartridges, described and shown, are also described and shown in Specification 259,799.
