Abstract

Feeding and registering webs.-In caramelwrapping and like machines employing a paper web that is intermittently fed forward and cut, feeding of the correct length at each operation is ensured by means comprising an electric switcharm or the like which controls a device for arresting the web each time the switch arm coincides with one of a series of perforations disposed at regular intervals in the web. In the machine shown in the Figure, the web a is drawn from a roll b by means of feed-rollers d, e, the roller d being operated intermittently by means of a pawl g on a rocking arm h connected by a link i to a driving-disc j. The web passes through a guide k and beneath a rubber-faced brake constituted by the pivoted armature l of an electro-magnet m, the brake being normally out of contact with the web. The electromagnet is in circuit with a contact arm p and a contact o, the contact arm being controlled by perforations in the web, and the contact being opened and closed by a segmental rim n on the disc j. The perforations occur at intervals equal to the lengths into which the web is cut, and when the web bears repeated imprints the perforations are placed midway between the imprints. When a perforation coincides with the contact arm the brake is applied and the web is arrested, the feed-rollers slipping. Contact rollers may be arranged under a contact roller on the arm p. The web is tensioned by a guide u on a spring-urged lever t which is rocked by a cam v to relieve the tension during operation of the feed-rollers.
