Abstract
262,552. Dewar, W. Oct. 6, 1925. Roasting.-The copper present in ores or other products containing copper in the form of silicate is converted to oxide so that it is soluble in an ammoniacal solution or solvent in the absence of an oxidizing atmosphere by subjecting the ores &c. to a preliminary heating at a regulated temperature in an atmosphere which does not reduce the copper to the metallic state. For instance, the ore, which may contain copper oxide, carbonate, and silicate, or the silicate alone, mav be heated at 190-230‹ C. in the presence of producer gas for ¢-1 hour, or it may be heated in air or other neutral atmosphere at 500-550‹ C. for a like period, but the temperature employed and the duration of the heat treatment are dependant on the size of the particles, the percentage of copper in the ore, and its chemical nature. On leaching the treated ore with an ammoniacal solution or solvent, the copper present passes into solution without employing a current of air or oxygen. Specification 185,242 is referred to.
