Description
A WHEELED BARROW DEVICE
Field of the Disclosure
The present disclosure relates to a wheeled barrow device.
In particular, the present disclosure relates a wheeled barrow device configured to be folded such that it can be stored and/or transported.
Background to the Disclosure
Devices for transporting material around a site, including wheeled barrow devices, are already very widely used. However, especially domestically, their use although vital when required, is often sporadic.
The inventors have appreciated that it would be desirable to provide a wheeled barrow that enables more convenient storage when the wheeled barrow is not in use, while maintaining, if not, improving the performance of the wheeled barrow in use.
Further, the inventors have appreciated that it would be desirable to provide a more sustainable wheeled barrow.
Summary of the Disclosure
The present disclosure provides a wheeled barrow device as defined in the appended independent claim, to which reference should now be made.
Preferred or advantageous features of the disclosure are set out in the dependent claims, to which reference should now be made.
According to a first aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a wheeled barrow comprising a foldable frame comprising a first frame member and a second frame member. The wheeled barrow further comprises at least one wheel rotatably coupled to the first frame member and a removable body portion configured to extend between the first frame member and the second frame member. The first frame member and the second frame member are pivotably coupled for movement between an open configuration and a closed configuration. In the open configuration, a first longitudinal end of the first frame member and a second longitudinal end of the second frame member are spaced from one another so that the removable body portion is in an expanded state. In the closed configuration, the first -2 -longitudinal end of the first frame member and the second longitudinal end of the second frame member are proximate one another so that the removable body portion is in a collapsed state.
A wheeled barrow according to the first aspect advantageously provides a foldable wheeled barrow.
The wheeled barrow according to the first aspect may effectively be used to carry out all the required functions of a wheeled barrow while in use, such as storing, transporting and lifting material around a site, but may also be conveniently folded such that it is stored away while it is not in use or such that it can be transported easily. As such, the present disclosure provides the advantages of a collapsible and storable wheeled barrow without reducing the performance of the wheeled barrow in use.
Providing a foldable wheeled barrow is advantageous because it can be stored easily due to its compact volume in a closed configuration.
In the closed configuration the first frame member and the second frame member may be arranged substantially parallel to one another.
Advantageously, the foldable wheeled barrow may be stored inside due to the compact size which may consequently increase the lifetime of the wheeled barrow. This is because there may be a reduction in deterioration of the product that would commonly occur from being stored outside, for example rust.
Further, the reduction in volume when the wheeled barrow is in the closed configuration may also be beneficial for transporting the wheeled barrow. For example, transporting multiple wheeled barrows to a gardening site. A transport vehicle may be able to transport an increased number of wheeled barrows in one journey due to their compact nature and reduced volume.
The first frame member and the second member being pivotably coupled such that they can move between an open configuration and a closed configuration may provide a simple means for collapsing the wheeled barrow such that it can be stored. Specifically, it may provide a simple means for collapsing the wheeled barrow such that in the closed configuration the first frame member and the second frame member are arranged substantially parallel to one another. This advantageously provides a wheeled barrow that can be reduced significantly in -3 -volume when in the closed configuration such that when it is stored and/or transported it takes up minimal space or at least significantly less space than in the open configuration.
The wheeled barrow according to the first aspect comprises a removable body portion configured to extend between the first frame member and the second frame member. The removable body portion may advantageously provide a means for storing, lifting and transporting material within the wheeled barrow.
Further, the body portion being detachable from the foldable frame may provide a more sustainable and/or more practical wheeled barrow. For example, if the body portion is damaged, the body portion may be removed and replaced without having to purchase, order, or manufacture a whole new wheeled barrow. This may advantageously reduce the costs for the manufacturer and the owner while also potentially reducing the overall amount of material required to produce the products.
Further, if the removable body portion is a fabric body portion or some other washable material, the detachable nature of the body portion may allow for the user to remove the body portion, clean it, and re-attach it. This in turn may increase the lifetime of the product.
The removable body portion may also provide the advantage of allowing the user to fill the removable body portion directly with garden waste, for example while it is in an open configuration, and then remove the body portion from the foldable frame and empty the contents into a compost bin for example. This may remove the need to the lift the entire wheeled barrow up to remove the contents into the bin. This may also remove the need for the user to empty the contents of the removable body portion by hand.
Optionally, the wheel may be removably coupled to the first frame member. This may be advantageous as it may allow the wheel to be removed such that the wheeled barrow can be transported and/or stored more easily. Further, it may allow the wheel to be replaced easily in the event the wheel is damaged, further contributing to the increased lifetime of the overall product and as such the increased sustainability of the product. The wheel may be removably coupled to a second longitudinal end of the first frame member.
Optionally, the wheeled barrow according to the first aspect may further comprise at least one handle attachable the first frame member. The at least one handle may advantageously provide an effective means for the user of the wheeled barrow to move the barrow in the chosen direction. The at least one handle may comprise a gripped portion to ensure secure -4 -handling of the wheeled barrow. The at least one handle may be of a shape such that it conforms to the standard shape of a hand. The handle may be of a material such as rubber to provide a comfortable ergonomic grip. Alternatively, the handle may be made of wood or metal.
The wheeled barrow may comprise two handles. Each handle may extend from the first frame member. The two handles may be laterally spaced apart. The handles may be attachable to the first longitudinal end of the first frame member.
Optionally, the second frame member may comprise a removably attachable leg portion, removably couplable to the second frame member.
The removably attachable leg portion may provide a means for supporting the wheeled barrow in the open configuration such that it can be rested in the open configuration without the support of the user.
The leg portion may be attached to the second frame member and detached from the second frame member. The second frame member comprising a removably attachable leg portion may advantageously provide a means for further reducing the size of the wheeled barrow for packaging, transporting, and/or storage for example.
The removably attachable leg portion may be attached to the second frame member via an interference fit between the two parts.
Alternatively, the leg portion and the second frame member may be attached via a fastening means.
Optionally, the first frame member and the second frame member may be tubular members. The removably attachable leg portion may be a tubular member. The first frame member and/or the second frame member and/or the removably attachable leg portion may be of a lightweight and strong material. The material of one or more said members may vary depending on the load capacity required of the wheeled barrow. For example, the first frame member and/or the second frame member and/or the removably attachable leg portion may comprise hollow steel frames.
Optionally, in the open configuration, the removably attachable leg portion and the at least one wheel spaced from one another and in the closed configuration, the removably attachable leg -5 -portion and the at least one wheel are proximate one another. This may advantageously provide a wheeled barrow that may be reduced significantly in volume when in the closed configuration such that when it is stored and/or transported it takes up minimal space Optionally, the foldable frame may be configured such that, in the open configuration, the removable body portion has a substantially flat bottom surface. This may advantageously provide a removable body portion suitable for storing, lifting and transporting material.
Optionally, the foldable frame may be configured such that, in the open configuration, and when the wheeled barrow is at rest, a bottom surface of the removable body portion is substantially parallel to a ground surface. The foldable frame, in particular the first frame member and the second frame member, being configured such that, in the open configuration, the removable body portion is expanded such that it has a substantially flat bottom surface which is substantially parallel to the ground surface may advantageously ensure that the wheeled barrow device can transport material that is required to remain in a particular orientation. For example, potted plants can be transported within the wheeled barrow device because the flat bottom surface provides a means for ensuring they remain upright.
Optionally, in the open configuration, the removable body portion may approximate the shape of a substantially trapezoidal prism.
Optionally, in the open configuration, the opposing sides of the removable body portion at the first and second longitudinal end of the wheeled barrow are configured to be at an angle of between about 95 degrees and about 130 degrees to the bottom surface of the removable body portion. Preferably, said angle is about 100 degrees.
Alternatively, the opposing sides of the removable body portion at the first and second longitudinal end of the wheeled barrow may be at differing angles to the bottom surface of the removable body portion. For example, the first longitudinal end may be at an angle of about 95 degrees and the second longitudinal end may be at an angle of about 115 degrees.
In the open configuration, the side panels of the removable body portion that extend from the first longitudinal end to the second longitudinal end may be substantially perpendicular to the bottom surface of the removable body portion. The surface area of the bottom surface of the removable body portion may be dependent on the dimensions of the frame members and the angle of the sides of the removable body portion with respect to the flat bottom surface. As such, the removable body portion at the first and second longitudinal end of the wheeled -6 -barrow being configured to be at an angle of about 100 degrees to the bottom surface of the removable body portion in the open configuration may advantageously maximise the surface area of the bottom surface. This may be advantageous as it may increase the storage capabilities of the wheeled barrow device. If the bottom surface area of the removable body portion is increased, the volume of material that can be stored, transported and lifted may also be increased. As such, the foldable frame is configured to ensure the surface area of the bottom surface of the removable body portion may be maximised.
Optionally, the removable body portion may comprise a first attachment means for releasably attaching a first end of the removable body portion to the first frame member and a second attachment means for releasably attaching a second end of the removable body portion to the second frame member. This may advantageously provide a means for attaching and detaching the removable body portion from the foldable frame.
Optionally, at least one of the first and second attachment means may comprise at least one fastener. This may advantageously provide a simple means for attaching and detaching the removable body portion from the foldable frame. The at least one fastener may provide a means for attaching and detaching the removable body portion from the foldable frame such that it can be implemented easily onto the removable body portion without extensive manufacturing.
The removable body portion may comprise a plurality of snap fasteners, wherein the first end of the removable body portion is wrapped around the first longitudinal end of the first frame member such that the first end of the removable portion attaches to a further section of the removable body portion and/or the first frame member via the snap fasteners. Each snap fastener may comprise a pair of interlocking discs, wherein the first disc is attached to an inner surface of the first end of the removable body portion and the second disc is attached to a further section of the removable body portion and/or the first frame member.
Alternative fasteners or attachment means will be appreciated by the skilled person. These may include, for example, one or more lengths of hook and loop fastener and/or one or more clips.
In an alternative example, the first longitudinal end of the first frame member may comprise at least one hook or at least one ring and the first end of the removable body portion may comprise at least one hook or at least one ring. Where the at least one hook of the first frame member is attachable to the at least one ring of the removable body portion and vice versa. 7 -
Alternative attachment means will be appreciated by the skilled person.
Optionally, the foldable frame may comprise a locking mechanism configured to lock said foldable frame in an open configuration and/or in the closed configuration. This may advantageously provide a means for ensuring the foldable frame remains in the required configuration. For example, in use the wheeled barrow should be in the open configuration and as a result the locking mechanism may ensure the wheeled barrow remains in the open configuration until the user pulls the second longitudinal end of the second frame member towards the first longitudinal end of the first frame member and as a result releases the locking mechanism.
Optionally, the locking mechanism may be a latch coupled to one of the first frame member and the second frame member and releasably engageable with the other frame member. In particular, the locking mechanism may be a sliding pivot latch with a self-locking mechanism. The locking mechanism may be configured to be easily releasable by the user lifting the second longitudinal end of the second frame member towards the first longitudinal end of the first frame member. Further, the locking mechanism may ensure the wheeled barrow can be moved from an open configuration to a closed figuration in a single action.
Additionally, the locking mechanism may comprise a bracket configured to ensure the movement between the open configuration and the closed configuration and vice versa is a smooth movement. The bracket may guide the second frame member towards the first frame member such that they end up being substantially parallel in the closed configuration.
Optionally, the removable body portion may comprise at least one pocket. This may advantageously provide a means for storage. In particular, for storing tools for gardening for example. The dimensions of the at least one pocket may vary depending on the size of the wheeled barrow and the particular items to be stored.
Optionally, the at least one pocket may be located on an outer surface of the removable body portion. This may advantageously provide a means for storage that is easily accessible to the user of the wheeled barrow.
Preferably, the wheeled barrow may comprise a plurality of pockets on an outer surface of the removable body portion. Additionally, the wheeled barrow may comprise a plurality of pockets on an inner surface of the removable body portion. -8 -
Additionally, the at least one pocket may be removable from the outer and/or inner surface of the removable body portion. This may be advantageous because it may allow the at least one pocket to be removed and replaced if it is damaged. Additionally, it may allow the at least one pocket to be removed, washed and reattached for example. It may also allow the pockets to be rearranged, to be adjustable and/or to be replaceable.
The at least one pocket may comprise a hook and loop attachment fastener for attachment to the removable body portion. Alternative attachment means will be appreciated by the skilled person.
Optionally, the removable body portion may comprise at least one detachable internal divider. Optionally, the removable body portion comprises a plurality of detachable internal dividers. The or each detachable internal divider may be of a substantially rigid material. Further, the internal divider may be configured to be attached in a vertical and/or horizontal configuration. The or each internal divider may advantageously provide discrete loading spaces within the removable body portion. The detachable nature of the internal divider(s) may be advantageous because it allows for the internal divider(s) to be rearranged, adjusted and/or displaced.
The at least one internal divider and/or the at least one pocket may be configured to fold or collapse when the removable body portion is in a collapsed state. Advantageously, this may mean that the internal dividers and/or the at least one pocket do not need to be removed upon movement from the open configuration to the closed configuration.
Optionally, the at least one divider comprises a hook and loop faster for attachment to the removable body portion. Alternative attachment means will be appreciated by the skilled person.
Optionally, the first frame member may comprise a hook configured to hang the wheeled barrow in the closed configuration. This may advantageously provide a simple means for storing the wheeled barrow in the closed configuration. The hook may be permanently or temporarily arranged. For example the hook may be configured to be a tubular or rigid extension from the frame.
Alternative means for hanging the wheeled barrow in the closed configuration will be appreciated by the skilled person. For example, the at least one handle may comprise a hook. -9 -
Optionally, the removable body portion may comprise a foldable structure. Optionally, the removable body portion may comprise a flexible structure. This may advantageously mean that the removable body portion will collapse when the wheeled barrow is moved from an open configuration to a closed configuration. Further, the removable body portion comprising a foldable structure and/or a flexible structure may mean that the removable body portion can be collapsed into a reduced volume such that it is convenient to store.
Preferably, the removable body portion is comprised of a fabric material.
The removable body portion may comprise one or more stiffeners. The one or more stiffener may be located internally and/or external to the fabric body.
It should be appreciated that particular combinations of the various features described and defined in any aspects of the disclosure can be implemented and/or supplied and/or used independently.

Description of Example Embodiments
Figure 1 illustrates the main components of a wheeled barrow 100 according to the present disclosure. The wheeled barrow 100 comprises a foldable frame comprising a first frame member 102 and a second frame member 104. The first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are configured to be pivotably coupled for movement between an open configuration as shown in Figure 1 and a closed configuration as shown in Figure 2. In the closed configuration, the first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are arranged substantially parallel to one another.
As shown in Figure 1, the wheeled barrow 100 comprises at least one wheel 106 rotatably coupled to a second longitudinal end of the first frame member 102. The wheeled barrow 100 further comprises a removable body portion 108 configured to extend between a first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 and a second longitudinal end of a second frame member 104. In the open configuration, the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 and the second longitudinal end of a second frame member 104 are at opposing longitudinal ends of the wheeled barrow 100 and the removable body portion 108 is expanded.
Figure 2 illustrates the wheeled barrow 100 in the closed configuration. In the closed configuration the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 and the second longitudinal end of a second frame member 104 are adjacent at a longitudinal end of the wheeled barrow 100. Further, in the closed configuration the removable body portion 108 is collapsed. As can be seen, the wheeled barrow 100 in the closed configuration is significantly reduced in volume from the volume of the wheeled barrow 100 in the open configuration, such that it can be easily stored or transported.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are configured to be pivotably coupled such that in the open configuration the foldable frame approximates an skewed 'X' shaped from the side view. The first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are pivotably coupled by a threaded bolt 112. The first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are coupled by a threaded bolt 112 on each side of the foldable frame. The threaded bolt 112 assists in ensuring the foldable frame pivots about a fixed point. Further, it ensures the first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 remain coupled 104. Alternative fixing means will be appreciated by the person skilled in the art.
The first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are tubular members. The first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are power coated steel tubes which are bent to form the desired shape.
The foldable frame further comprises a locking mechanism 110 configured to lock said foldable frame in an open configuration and/or in the closed configuration. In this example embodiment, the locking mechanism 110 is a sliding pivot latch with a self-locking mechanism. The sliding pivot latch 110 is coupled to the first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 and is situated below the threaded bolt 112. In particular, a first end of the sliding pivot latch 110 is coupled to an exterior portion of the first frame member 102 via a further threaded bolt 116. A second end of the sliding pivot latch 110 is releasably coupled to an interior portion of the second frame member 104. The sliding pivot latch 110 comprises a bracket 114 configured to guide the releasably coupled second frame member 104 from the open configuration to the closed configuration and vice versa.
The foldable frame is configured such that, in the open configuration, the removable body portion 108 has a substantially flat bottom surface, as shown in Figure 1. In particular, in the open configuration, and at rest, a bottom surface of the removable body portion 108 is substantially parallel to a ground surface. In the open configuration, the removable body portion 108 is of a substantially skewed trapezium prism shape. As can be seen, the foldable frame is configured such that the surface area of the flat bottom surface of the removable body portion 108 is large. In particular, the foldable frame is configured such that the length of the flat bottom surface of the removable body portion 108 is only marginally smaller than the distance between the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 and a second longitudinal end of a second frame member 104. The removable body portion 108 of the example embodiment is of a fabric material. The removable body portion 108 is foldable and flexible to assist with the collapsible and foldable nature of the wheeled barrow 100 As clearly shown in Figure 3 the wheeled barrow 100 further comprises two handles 300a and 300b. The handles 300a, 300b are laterally spaced apart and extend from the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102. The handles 300a, 300b extend at an angle from the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 such that they are in an ergonomic position for the user. Further, the handles 300a, 300b are shaped such that they conform to the shape of an average user's hand. In this example embodiment, the handles 300a, 300b are of a rubber material and comprise ribbed portions to provide grip. Although not shown in the Figures, the handles 300a, 300b may be removably attached to the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102.
-12 -The second frame member 104 comprises a removably attachable leg portion 302. The removably attachable leg portion 302 extends from the first longitudinal end of the second frame member 104. The removably attachable leg portion 302 provides a means for ensuring the wheeled barrow 100 is balanced in a stationary position i.e. at rest. In this example embodiment the first longitudinal ends of the second frame member 104 form a sleeve. A second end of removably attachable leg portion 302 is configured to slot within the sleeve of the second frame member 104 to form an interference fit and a seamless join 304 between the second frame member 104 and the removably attachable leg portion 302. This provides a means of easily attaching the leg portion 302 to the foldable frame.
As can be seen clearly in Figure 3, the removably attachable leg portion 302 is configured to approximate a substantially 'W shape. As such, the removably attachable leg portion 302 of the example embodiment comprises two protruding parts 306a and 306b that form 'stands'. The portions of the removably attachable leg portion 302 that are in contact with the ground in the open configuration i.e. the stands 306a, 306b are curved. This ensures that the removably attachable leg portion 302 does not sink into the ground or get stuck into the ground due to the weight of the contents in the wheeled barrow 100.
The first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 comprises a flat lateral tubular portion 308 to which the first end of the removable body portion 108 is attached. The second longitudinal end of the second frame member 104 also comprises a flat lateral tubular portion 310 to which the second end of the removable body portion 108 is attached. The first end of the removable body portion 108 is folded over the flat lateral tubular portion 308 of the first frame member 102 and the second end of the removable body portion 108 is folded over the flat lateral tubular portion 310 of the second frame member 104.
As shown in Figure 4a the removable body portion 108 comprises a first attachment means 400 for releasably attaching the first end of the removable body portion 108 to the flat lateral tubular portion 308 of the first frame member 102. Figure 4b illustrates a second attachment means 402 for releasably attaching the second end of the removable body portion 108 to the flat lateral tubular portion 310 of the second frame member 104. The means for releasably attaching the first end and the second end 400 and 402 of the removable body portion 108 to the respective frame member 102 and 104 in this example embodiment is snap fasteners. The removable body portion 108 comprises a plurality of snap fasteners at the first end and the second end. In particular, the removable body portion 108 comprises a 5 snap fasteners at the first end and 5 snap fasteners at the second end.
Figure 5 illustrates the removable pockets 500 and detachable internal dividers 502 of the removable body portion 108. The removable body portion 108 comprises a plurality of -13 -removable pockets 500 on the outer surface of the removable body portion 108. In particular, in this example embodiment, the removable body portion 108 comprises four pockets 500 on the outer surface of a side panel of the removable body portion 108 and comprises three pockets 506 on the outer surface of the front panel of the removable body portion 108. The pockets 500 provide a means of storage, for example storing gardening equipment. The plurality of pockets 500 may comprise a hook and loop fastener for attachment to the removable body portion 108.
As mentioned, the removable body portion 108 comprises detachable internal dividers 502. In this example embodiment, the removable body portion comprises two horizontal side dividers that extend between the inner surface of the side walls of the removable body portion 108 and two vertical central dividers which are parallel to the side panels. These internal dividers form loading spaces within the removable body portion 108. The internal dividers 502 of the example embodiment are removable as shown in Figure 6. The internal dividers 502 comprise a hook and loop fasteners 600 for attachment to the hoop and loop fasteners 602 of the removable body portion 108. This allows the internal dividers 502 to be removed or rearranged.
The wheeled barrow 100 further comprises a hook 700 as illustrated in Figure 7. The hook 700 is configured to hang the wheeled barrow 100 in the closed configuration. The hook 700 of the example embodiment is a wire attached to the flat lateral tubular portion 308 at the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 to form a loop. As such, when in the closed configuration, the loop 700 can be hung over a hook on the wall in the storage area. Although not shown the hook 700 may comprises ridges such that the wheeled barrow when hung remains stationary. Alternative means for hanging up the wheeled barrow will be appreciated by the skilled person.
Figure 8 illustrates the movement of the wheeled barrow 100 between the open configuration to the closed configuration. In use the wheeled barrow 100 is in the open configuration and the removable body portion 108 is expanded. Once, the user no longer needs to use the wheeled barrow 100, the second longitudinal end of the second frame member 104 can be lifted towards the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102. This will unlock the locking mechanism 110. The bracket 114 will assist the user with guiding the second longitudinal end of the second frame member 104 towards the first longitudinal end of the first frame member 102 about the pivot point. Once the wheeled barrow 100 is in the closed configuration, the first frame member 102 and the second frame member 104 are substantially parallel and the removable body portion 108 is collapsed such that the wheeled barrow can -14 -be stored and/or transported. In particular, the wheeled barrow can be hung on the wall of the area in which the wheeled barrow is being stored.
It will be understood that the disclosure has been described above purely by way of example, and modifications of detail can be made within the scope of the disclosure. Each feature disclosed in the description, and (where appropriate) the claims and drawings may be provided independently or in any appropriate combination.
