Abstract

A measuring device 1 for a staff X has an elongate slider housing 10 connectable to or forming part of the staff X, the housing having a top end 1OA and a bottom end 10b flush with the bottom of the staff, an elongate slider 20 which slides in and out of the housing 10, measurement means 12,23 to measure the extent the slider extends from the bottom of the staff, and locking means 21 to lock the slider in an extended position from the slider. A laser reader can be secured to the staff and the staff can then be moved to different locations on the floor and raised or lowered until the laser reader reads “horizontal” to a laser beam from rotating laser, the slider can then be extended from its slider housing until it touches the floor and the locking means to lock the slider in an extended position from the slider housing, and the height of the bottom of the staff from the floor can then be measured using a measuring means. The housing may be substantially C-shaped in cross-section. This device is intended to allow a single person to be able to carry out the building floor level measurement operation.

Description

I
TITLE: Measurement Device for Staff The present invention relates to a measurement device for a staff The invention also relates to a staff with a measurement device. The staff is ideally used to support a laser reader receiving laser beams from a rotating laser When measuring differences in levels of a floor for instance when building, it is common practice to place a rotating laser at a fixed height above the floor to be measured, and connect a laser reader to a staff The staff can then be moved to different locations on the floor and raised or lowered until the laser reader reads "horizontal" to the laser beam from the rotating laser, and the height of the bottom of the staff from the floor can then be measured using a measuring tape or the like. Measuring the height of the bottom of the staff from the floor using a measuring tape requires more than one person.
The invention seeks to provide a measuring device which allows the aforementioned job to be done by a single person.
According to the present invention there is provided a measuring device for a staff comprising a) an elongate slider housing connectable to or forming part of the staff, the housing having a top end, and a bottom end flush with the bottom of the staff b) an elongate slider which slides in and out of the housing c) measurement means to measure the extent the slider extends from the bottom of the staff, and d) locking means to lock the slider in an extended position from the slider, in use a laser reader can be secured to the staff and the staff can then be moved to different locations on the floor and raised or lowered until the laser reader reads "horizontal" to a laser beam from rotating laser, the slider can then be extended from its slider housing until it touches the floor and the locking means used to lock the slider in an extended positon from the slider housing, and the height of the bottom of the staff from the floor can then be measured using the measurement means.
Preferably the slider has a marker which can set at a zero position on the measurement means when the slider is extended a predetermined amount out of the slider housing, and the measurement means used to measure the distance of the slider end towards or away from the slider housing from this zero position.
Preferably the measurement means is a ruler on the slider housing with an arrow on the slider.
Preferably the locking means is a rotating knob on the slider.
The slider may have a foot to engage the floor.
In one embodiment the measurement device is adapted to be retro fitted to a staff and includes a securement means on the slider housing to secure it to the face of a staff The securement means may be a self-adhesive tape.
In another embodiment the bottom of a staff acts as the slider housing.
Preferably the slider housing is generally C-shaped extrusion around a reciprocating slider, with measurement means adjacent the elongate ends of extrusion. Preferably the slider has a marker which moves along the measurement means as the slider moves in and out of the housing.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a measuring device for fitment to a bottom of a staff, and Figure 2 shows the measuring device fitted to the bottom of a staff supporting a laser reader in use with a rotating laser.
Referring to Figure there is shown a measuring device 1 for a staff X. Device 1 has a generally C-shaped elongate slider housing 10 which may be extruded from aluminium or other material. Slider housing has a rear face supporting a layer of self-adhesive tape 11 to secure the housing 10 to the bottom of the staff The housing has a top end 10A and a bottom end 10B, and bottom end 10B is placed flush with the bottom of the shaft X. An elongate slider 20 slides in and out of the slider housing 10. A locking means in the form of a rotatable knurled knob 21 is provided to lock the slider in an extended position from the slider housing. Slider 20 has a foot 22 at its bottom end.
Measurement means is provided to measure the extent the slider extends from the bottom of the staff. The measurement means incJudes a marker 23 on the slider aligning with variable positions along a ruler 12 adjacent on elongate ends end of the C-shaped housing 10. As shown, the slider marker 23 can set at a "zero" position on the measurement means when the slider is extended a predetermined amount out of the slider housing, and the measurement means used to measure the distance of the slider end towards or away from the slider housing from this zero position.
As shown in Figure 2. The measurement device 1 can be used as follows.
A laser reader "A" is placed a predetermined distance off the floor of a building which slopes down from left to right as shown in the drawing. Laser reader generates a rotating laser bean in a horizontal plane. A laser reader "B" is placed toward the top of staff X. In use the laser reader and the staff and the staff can then be moved to different locations on the floor and raised or lowered until the laser reader reads "horizontal" to a laser beam from rotating laser, the slider 20 can then be extended or retracted from its slider housing until it touches the floor and the locking means 21 used to lock the slider in an extended positon from the slider housing, and the height of the bottom of the staff from the floor can then be measured using a measuring means. This can be done by a single person. The various measured levels in a floor can be used to calculate for example how much concrete might be required to level the floor.
Although as shown in Figure 1, the measurement device 1 may designed to be retro-fitted to a staff, or a staff could be produced with the bottom end of the staff acting as the slider housing, with the slider reciprocating in and out of the staff bottom end.
The invention also extends to a levelling system comprising a rotating laser, a laser reader on a staff, and a measuring device as described above on or ntegral with the staff
