Description

An overwrap
Technical Field
The present disclosure relates to an overwrap for a tobacco industry product pack. A tobacco industry product pack is also disclosed.
Background
Tobacco industry product packs are often wrapped in an overwrap to maintain the freshness of the product contained within the pack. The overwrap is usually removable io from the pack by a tear strip, which when pulled by a consumer, tears and removes the overwrap.
Summary
According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided an overwrap for a tobacco industry product pack containing a wrapped bundle of tobacco industry products, said overwrap extending about the tobacco industry product pack and having a region where first and second layers of the overwrap overlap, and wherein the first and second layers are connected to each other at a plurality of discrete locations in said region of overlap.
The tobacco industry product pack may contain a single wrapped bundle of tobacco industry products.
The overwrap may extend about a plurality of tobacco industry product packs arranged in a collation to retain the tobacco industry product packs in the collation.
The plurality of discrete locations may be spaced from one another within the region of overlap.
The plurality of discrete locations may be spaced from one another such that a fingerlift is provided configured to facilitate a consumer opening the tobacco industry product pack.
The plurality of discrete locations may be equally spaced from one another within the region of overlap.
The plurality of discrete locations may be centrally aligned within the region of overlap. The region of overlap may overlie a front face of the tobacco industry product pack.
The region of overlap may extend along the height of the tobacco industry product pack.
The overwrap may be configured such the overwrap may be removed from the tobacco industry product pack by a user gripping the overwrap in the spaces between the jo discrete locations.
The plurality of discrete locations may be a plurality of adhesive locations configured to connect the first and second layers of the overwrap.
The plurality of discrete locations may be a plurality of heat treated locations configured to connect the first and second layers of the overwrap.
The plurality of discrete locations may comprise at least one adhesive location and at least one heat treated location.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a tobacco industry product pack comprising: a pack outer; a wrapped bundle of tobacco industry products received in the pack outer; and an overwrap according to the present disclosure wrapped around the pack outer.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a tobacco industry product pack, the method comprising: providing a pack outer and a wrapped bundle of tobacco industry products within the pack outer; and wrapping the pack outer in an overwrap according to the present disclosure.
The method may comprise adhering the first and second layers of overwrap in discrete locations in the region of overlap to connect the first and second layers together.
The method may comprise heat treating the first and second layers of overwrap in discrete locations in the region of overlap to connect the first and second layers together. -3 -
Brief Description of the Drawings
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with 5 reference to accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an isometric view of a tobacco industry product pack wrapped in an overwrap according to an embodiment of the invention; and Figure 2 shows method steps for a method of manufacturing a tobacco industry product /o pack according to an embodiment of the invention.
Detailed Description
As used herein, the term "tobacco industry product" is intended to encompass products that deliver at least one substance to a user and includes combustible aerosol provision systems, such as cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, and tobacco for pipes or for roll-your-own or for make-your-own cigarettes (whether based on tobacco, tobacco derivatives, expanded tobacco, reconstituted tobacco, tobacco substitutes or other smokable material).
Figure 1 illustrates an isometric view of a tobacco industry product pack wrapped in an overwrap according to an embodiment of the invention. The pack 1 comprises a front face 2 and a rear face 3 separated by a pair of side faces 4, and a pair of end faces 5. The pack 1 contains a wrapped bundle of tobacco industry products (not shown). The pack 1 is wrapped in an overwrap 6 that extends about the pack 1 and has a region 7 where a or first layer 8 and a second layer 9 of the overwrap 6 overlap. In the region of overlap 7, the first and second layers 8, 9 of the overwrap 6 are connected to each other at a plurality of discrete locations to.
As seen in -Figure 1, the region of overlap 7 overlies the front face 2 of the pack landis arranged substantially centrally. Alternatively, the region of overlap 7 may not be centrally aligned with the front face 2 of the pack 1 and may be offset from the centre of the pack 1. It is to be appreciated that, the region of overlap 7 may be arranged such that the region of overlap 7 overlies one of the side faces 4 or end faces 5 of the pack 1. Additionally, as seen in Figure 1, the region of overlap 7 extends along the height of the pack 1. -4 -
The plurality of discrete locations to are spaced from one another and centrally aligned within the region of overlap 7. The plurality of discrete locations to may be equally spaced from one another. Alternatively, the plurality of discrete locations to may not be centrally aligned within the region of overlap 7. As seen in Figure 1, the plurality of discrete locations to are rectangular in shape. It is to be appreciated that the plurality of discrete locations to may be any suitable shape such as square, circular, elliptical etc. Since the plurality of discrete locations to are spaced from one another, the overwrap 6 may be removed from the pack 1 by a consumer gripping the overwrap 6 in the spaces between the plurality of discrete locations to and pulling the overwrap 6. In other words, the above arrangement provides a fingerlift which allows a user to easily open the pack 1 whilst maintaining the freshness of the products within the pack 1.
In one embodiment, the plurality of discrete locations to are a plurality of adhesive locations configured to connect the first and second layers 8, 9 of the overwrap 6.
Alternatively in another embodiment, the plurality of discrete locations to are a plurality of heat treated locations. Furthermore, in another embodiment, the plurality of discrete locations to may comprise at least one adhesive location and at least one heat treated location. Therefore, the pack 1 is openable without the need for a more involved opening mechanism, such as a teartape. Additionally, in embodiments where the discrete locations to are adhesive locations, the pack 1 can be sealed using minimal quantities of adhesive.
The overwrap 6 is a film overwrap. Alternatively, the overwrap 6 may be formed from a more environmentally friendly material such as a paper-based material.
Although the overwrap is described in relation to a single tobacco industry product pack, it is to be appreciated that the overwrap may be applied to a collation of tobacco industry product packs to retain the packs within the collation.
Figure 2 illustrates method steps for a method of manufacturing a tobacco industry product pack. The method comprises a first step Si of providing a pack outer and a wrapped bundle of tobacco industry products within the pack outer and a second step S2 of wrapping the pack outer in an overwrap according to the present disclosure.
When the plurality of discrete locations in the region of overlap are adhesive locations, the method further comprises a third step S3 of adhering the first and second layers of -5 -the overwrap in discrete locations in the region of overlap to connect the first and second layers of the overwrap together.
When the plurality of discrete locations in the region of overlap are heat treated locations, the method further comprises a fourth step S4 of heat treating the first and second layers of the overwrap in discrete locations in the region of overlap to connect the first and second layers of the overwrap together.
When the plurality of discrete locations comprises at least one adhesive location and at /o least one heat treated location, the method further comprises both steps S3 and 54.
The various embodiments described herein are presented only to assist in understanding and teaching the claimed features. These embodiments are provided as a representative sample of embodiments only, and are not exhaustive and/or exclusive.
It is to be understood that advantages, embodiments, examples, functions, features, structures, and/or other aspects described herein are not to be considered limitations on the scope of the invention as defined by the claims or limitations on equivalents to the claims, and that other embodiments may be utilised and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the claimed invention.
