Abstract

261,123. Ahlm, C. E. F. Aug. 26, 1925. Variable-speed gearing; clutches, claw.-A twospeed gear comprises driving and driven shafts &c. 2, 3 extending outwardly adapted to be connected alternatively through, a sliding dental clutch sleeve 7 and an internal and external toothed ring 15, which turns on a fixed eccentric axis formed by an enlargement 21 on one side of the driving-shaft bearing. The ring 15 is in constant mesh with a pinion P solid with the shaft 2, and also with an internally toothed ring P<3> upon a loose sleeve 23. The sleeve 7 has a ring of internal teeth 9 constantly meshing with long teeth 11 upon a driven member 3, and a ring of teeth 8, Fig. 2, which can be meshed alternatively with teeth 10 and teeth 25. The teeth 10 are fast on the shaft 2, this engagement, shown in Fig. 3, giving the direct drive. The teeth 25 are upon the gear sleeve 23, for a reduced speed, a configuration shown in Fig. 1. To facilitate the shifting of the clutch sleeve 7, the ends of the teeth in the clutch rings 10 and 25 are staggered, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, alternate teeth projecting, and alternate teeth of the ring 8 are omitted. The rings 23 and 15 are supported on spaced roller bearings, and the end bearings 4, 6 may be adapted to take thrust. The spur gearing may be within an inner casing 13, Fig. 3, oil being splashed from a sump 28 in the outer casing 1 through apertures 217, 29. When used as auxiliary series gearing upon a vehicle means are employed to prevent the gearing remaining in neutral. Such means forms the subject-matter of Specification 265,881. Thus a striker 52, Fig. 3, may slide on a guide 50 and be connected by springs 63 to the end of a control lever 65. A spring plunger, not shown, may hold the striker in its two gear positions. In the form shown in Fig; 1, the striker 30 is pivoted and has a cam arm 32 adapted to be held in its extreme or gear positions by a spring plunger 34. There is a spring connection between the striker shaft 30' and control lever 39. This control means is not claimed.
