Abstract

A dispensing apparatus (14 fig.1a) for packaging sheet material (2 fig.1a) formed from one or more layers has first and second ends (26, 28 fig.2b) defining an exit path (46 fig.2b). The dispensing apparatus has a braking assembly (58 fig.2a) to provide resistance to the dispensing of the roll of sheet material. A braking member 60 contacts locating means (52 fig.2a) and a control member 64 contacts the outer surface of the roll. The control member, via a biasing means 62, determines the amount of braking force applied to the roll, possibly by altering the gap 100 between the braking member and outer disc 56 as the diameter of the roll reduces during use. A cutting assembly (144 fig.8a) and a guide (132 fig.8a) may also be incorporated into the apparatus.
