Abstract

260,687. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Ltd., Sir W. G., Hadcock, Sir A. G., and Forster, G. Aug. 8, 1925. Ordnance breech mechanism. - Relates to power-operated breech mechanism of the kind described in Specification 212,698, in which a single piston and cylinder unit performs the dual operations of opening and closing the breech, and alternative means are provided for opening and closing the breech by hand, the hand gear being rendered inoperative when the power is applied. According to the invention, a valve for operating a clutch on the hand-gear shaft is combined with a stop-cock for opening the power cylinder to exhaust. As shown, the pressure fluid, before reaching the cylinder a, passes through a valve body h in which are fitted a stop-cock r and two plungers m, n which at the front are connected together and engage the clutch lever q for the hand gear. When the pressure is turned on, the plungers are driven forwards and the hand clutch is disengaged. When the pressure is turned off and the stop-cock r turned to the " hand " position, the power cylinder is opened to exhaust and the hand clutch is returned to the engaging position by its spring.
