Also disclosed is a garment comprising a body portion connected to a hood 42, wherein the hood is created from a piece of rectangular material by joining opposing edge portions of a long side of the material to form a peak, wherein the garment is further configured to form a rectangular or square receptacle from the hood for receiving the garment (see figure 5c).

Description

Title of the Invention Garment
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a garment comprising a body portion, such as a cape or poncho, and a hood attached thereto.
Background to Invention
It is known for a supporter of a national sporting team to express their support by draping a national flag portion across their shoulders. For the same purposes, it is further known to fashion a flag portion as either a hooded or hoodless cape or poncho. At the time of writing, garment 10 illustrated in fig. 1 is available for sale and comprises a rectangular cape 11 sporting a flag portion, additional left and right rectangular portions 12a, 12b connected to the rectangular flag portion 11 so as to form respective sleeves, and a hood 13.
Figs. 2A and 2B illustrate the forming of the hood of the garment of fig. 1 from a rectangular piece of material. The 3D peaked configuration is created using a piece of rectangular material by joining opposing edge portions a, b (as illustrated by the arrows) of a long side of the material to form a seam 21 and the peak 22.
Summary of the Invention
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a garment is provided comprises a body portion worn over shoulders and a flag portion, wherein the flag portion is detachably attached to the body portion. The flag portion is detachably attached, e.g. with a zip, to the body potion across the shoulders of the body portion wherein, when worn and viewed from the back, the flag portion drapes over the back of the body portion. Related thereto is a sealed package for sale comprising such a garment and at least one further flag portion. Further related thereto is a flag portion comprising a zip along the length of a long side of the flag portion.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention, a garment is provided comprising a body portion connected to a hood, wherein the hood is created from a piece of rectangular material by joining opposing edge portions of a long side of the material to form a peak, wherein the garment is further configured to form a rectangular or square receptacle from the hood for receiving the garment. Such a garment may comprise fastening means for joining at least portions of the short sides of the hood together or portions of the other long side of the hood together to form a rectangular or square receptacle for receiving the garment.
Further variations of the present invention are disclosed in the accompanying claims.
Brief Description of Drawings

Specific Description
Figs. 3A to 3C illustrate the forming of a receptacle for a body portion of a garment (such as a cape or poncho) from its hood according to the present invention. As with the conventional hood illustrated in figs. 2A and 2B, the 3D peaked configuration is created using a piece of rectangular material by joining opposing edge portions a, b of a long side of the material to form a seam 21 and the peak 23. In addition, in accordance with the present invention, both short sides d, e are provided with fastening means such as a zip, Velcro@ or press studs to join those sides d, e together to form a rectangular/square receptacle for receiving the garment in an open end (30), for example, as illustrated in figs. 5A to 51 and as described below.
The opposing edge portions of the long side of the material used to form the peak may be permanently joined or, alternatively, detachably joined by fastening means. Also, the opposing edge portions of the long side of the material may be used to form the peak are detachably joined by the same fastening means used to join portions of the other long side together and / or the short sides together. A long side of the material not used to form the peak of the hood may be attached along its length to a long side of the body portion. Alternatively, the centre of a long side of the material not used to form the peak of the hood is attached to the centre of a long side of the body portion.
Figs. 4A to 4C illustrate a garment according to the present invention. More specifically, figs. 4A and 4B illustrate a garment 40, when viewed from the front, formed from a cape 41 and attached to a hood 42 of the type shown in fig. 3C according to the present invention. The size of the hood relative to the cape is significant in so far as ensuring the cape will fit flat and snuggly in the hood. Ideally, the width of the hood as shown (the long side of the rectangular material forming the hood) is between 0 and 20% (preferably 10%) greater than a width corresponding to an integer factor of the width of the garment. In the present case, the width of the hood as shown is marginally wider than a third of the width of the garment. This would enable the garment to be folded on axes a, a', then b, b', then d and then e resulting in the arrangement of fig. 4B and ready to insert into the hood. In principle, the same sizing considerations would apply to a poncho.
Fig. 4C illustrates garment 40 when viewed from the back with a flag portion 45 detachably attached to the cape 41'. The flag portion 45 is detachably attached with a zip to the cape 41' across the shoulders of the cape whereby the flag portion drapes over the back of the cape. The female portion of the zip 44 is attached to the cape 41' and the male portion of the zip 46 is attached to the flag portion 45. When worn and viewed from the back, the flag portion is rectangular and centred within the rectangular cape, and with a border of the body portion showing around the entirety of the cape. The cape has Velcro@ on left and right shoulders of the cape which, when worn and attached, secure the cape around the wearers neck. Ideally, the hook portion of the Velcro® is on one shoulder facing away from the wearer and the loop portion is on the other shoulder facing the wearer so as not to chaff the wearer. Alternative attachment means to Velcro@ may be used. Also, the flag portion attachment could apply to a poncho or other garment.
The flag portion may comprise a sleeve (not shown) along a short side of the flag portion for receiving a flagpole when not used with the body portion. Also, the flag portion may comprise holes (not shown) located at the corners of the flag portion for attaching to an external surface when not used with the garment, i.e. as use a banner.
Fig. 4D illustrates an alternative garment 48 in the form of a poncho formed from what otherwise would be a cape 41 but with the attachment of a flag portion 45 to it. This provides for the cape to form a front of the poncho, and the flag to form a rear of the poncho. I.e., the attachment of the flag portion is used to convert a cape to a poncho.
Figs. 5A to 51 are illustrations, derived from photos, of the folding and storage flat of a prototype garment according to the present invention. In fig. 5A, the body portion of the garment is shown folded on axes a, a' and b as illustrated in fig. 4A. In fig. 5B, the body portion is shown folded on axes a, a', b, b' and d. In fig. 5C, the body portion is shown folded on axes a, a', b, b', d and e, resulting in an arrangement akin to that of fig. 4B.
In fig. 5D, the body portion is shown further folded, partially along axis c.
In figs. 5E and 5F, the body portion is shown completely folded along axis c with the hood partially covering the folded body portion, to some extent in fig. 5E and to a greater extent in fig. 5F.
In fig. 5G, the body portion is wholly received in the hood.
Thereafter, as illustrated in figs. 5H and 51, a zip attached to the hood (opposing sides of the zip being on sizes d and e of the hood as illustrated in fig. 3B) is shown first partially closed in fig. 5H and then fully closed in fig. 51. In total, this results in the body portion of the garment being folded flat and secured within the hood (the hood forming a receptacle as illustrated in fig. 3C) with a convenient handle connected so as to keep the open end of the hood (feature 30 in fic. 3C) upright when being carried.
A garment according to the present invention may be manufactured with conventional materials. Furthermore, when stored folded in the hood, the multiple layers of the body portion of the garment (whether a cape or poncho) will provide cushioning, and therefore the garment is suitable for use as a cushion and, conveniently for such use, sold as a sealed package with seating means (not shown) such as a foldable chair or stool.
Further variations of the present invention are disclosed in the accompanying claims.
