Abstract
259,632. Fairweather, H. G. C., (Automatic Paper Machinery Co., Inc.). May 6, 1925. Feeding and winding webs.-In a machine for forming small rolls of paper, cloth, &c., with a wound wrapper adapted also to cover the ends, the web is unwound from a parent roll, slit into units of desired width, wound on a core scored at points corresponding to the slits, severed, wrapped, glued, and discharged automatically. The web from the parent roll 1 passes over a spring roller 283 to take up slack, and then over feeding-rollers 5, 6, 7, Fig. 6, which are rotated from a motor-driven shaft 84, Fig. 12, through a one-tooth clutch 131 and gears 97, 99. The roller 7 has cutters 15, Fig. 6, which slit the web, this being directed around a core 3 by winding- rollers 8, 9, 10 and air jets 29, 30. The jets 30 are mounted on a lever 37 connected to a spring- pressed lever 25 carrying the roller 9, so that as the roll increases in diameter the jets 30 arewithdrawn. The whole machine is controlled by a cam drum 90, Fig. 12, driven from the shaft 84 through bevel and worm gear 85, 88 and a one-tooth clutch 177, Fig. 21. This drum carries a conductive plate 74, arranged to make contact with tappings E - - S of a resistance. 71, Fig. 23, in the circuit of the shunt winding of the driving-motor 70, so that as the drum moves from the starting position resistances are added to the shunt and the speed increases. A projection 186, Fig. 21, on the cam drum then throws out the clutch 177 so that the drum ceases to rotate until, after a considerable time, the clutch is thrown in again by a cam 200 driven through variable gear 193, 198 which can be set by a hand-lever 192 according to the diameter of the roll required. When the drum again starts to rotate it slows up the motor, then withdraws a lever 165, Fig. 8, for a moment from the cam groove of a clutch 117, and allows it to give cne rotation to the perforating cutter 18, Fig. 6. The drum then throws out the clutch 131, Fig. 12, and puts on a band brake 150, Fig. 8, thus stopping the feed-rollers 5, 6, 7 and causing the winding-rollers to tear the web at the perforations. The drum at the same time stops the parent roll by a brake 261, Fig. 1, and mechanism 263, 266, 268, and releases a spring- operated lever 213, Fig. 8, which in turn releases a lever 206 mounted on a rocking pawl 109 and pressed by a spring to clutch a gear 105, constantly driven by gear 104 on shaft 84, to its shaft 108. The shaft 108 acts through gearing 112, Fig. 1, to give a predetermined number of complete revolutions to rollers 11, 12, 13, Fig. 6, adapted to feed a plurality of overlapping wrapping strips from staggered rolls 2. These strips are glued at intervals by eccentric discs 41 and severed after being perforated by one rotation of a knife 45 driven through geneva mechanism. The gearing which drives these rollers also drives rollers 55, 56, 59 for scoring the cores 3. The drum then operates a lever 25, to swing the roller 9 out of the way, and a lever 252, Fig. 12, to rotate segmental gears 248, 249, which slide racks 246, 247, and core supports 65 carried thereby, in opposite directions, thus releasing the wound core 3, Fig. 11. The drum then operates on a lever 235, Fig. 8, to swing down the roller 56 and release a scored core, and then by means of a pin 127 acts through a gear wheel 126 and chain 125 to rotate the star wheels 54, 62, Fig. 6, through one tooth and feed one core from each to the scoring and wrapping rolls respectively. The drum then allows the rollers 56 and 9 to be returned by their springs 53, 27 and closes the core supports 65. Finally the drum closes the one-tooth clutch 131 and the cycle of operations is repeated. To ensure that the clutch 131 and core supports shall be moved from one position to another rapidly, although operated by a slow moving cam drum, a spring- pressed wedge 145, Fig. 14, is provided in each case to throw over the lever 138 or 252 as soon as it has been moved to the middle position by the drum. Also in the case of the lever 138 a lost-motion device 144, 136 is provided so that only the rapid movement is transmitted to the clutch lever 134. The drum 90 also controls a valve to admit air to the jets 29, 30. The lever 206, Fig. 8, has a pin 219 which can be moved inwards by hand-operated means to withdraw the stop 207 from the path of the lever 213 and allow the wrapping-rollers to be operated or adjusted by hand. The core delivered by the machine can easily be separated where scored and the projecting wrapper can be folded over the ends. Adjustable brakes 292, Fig. 1, may be provided for the wrapper rolls 2, a brake 261, for the roll 1, which is controlled by a handadjusted spring 276, and a spring-pressed roller 282 engaging the surface of the roll 1. The levers 75, 76 are for controlling the speed of the machine.
