Abstract

A device 20 for preventing a bath from overflowing in the form of a tube with a lower end for fitting into a plug hole and an opposed open top end. The tube may be formed of a flexible material such as resiliently deformable thermoplastic, rubber or silicone, with a tapered annular lower end which can form a tight friction seal into a plug hole. When water filling a bath reaches the top of the device it can flow into the hollow centre via the open top end and into the drain, to prevent the bath overflowing. The device may have a concertina form allowing adjustment of length to adjust desired maximum water depth. Another embodiment has a cylindrical from with a window in a side wall adjacent the lower end, comprising mesh or netting 21 and a sliding door 22. When opened the device may be used to allow a lower maximum level of water compared to the full height of the device e.g. for maintaining a shallow water depth when showering, wherein the mesh filters debris such as hair from entering the drain.

Description

A DEVICE FOR PREVENTING A BATH FROM OVERFLOWING
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a device for preventing a bath from overflowing and is concerned with the provision of an improved device for this purpose.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a device for preventing a bath from overflowing which is in the form of a tube which is so shaped at one end that it is a close fit in a bath plughole and is open at its other end.
The tubular device may be in the form of a concertina-like structure so that its height can be adjusted.
An opening may be provided in the wall of the tube adjacent the end thereof that fits in the plughole and a sliding door may be provided for closing the opening when so desired.
A mesh may be fitted in said opening so as to trap any hairs or the like contained in the water passing through the opening.
The device may be used to maintain a minimum level of water in the bath when a person standing in the bath is having a shower, so as to soften the person's toe nails prior to cutting.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a view of one embodiment of the invention in its unextended condition, Figure 2 is a view of the device shown in Figure 1 in its extended condition, Figure 3 is a plan view of the device shown in Figures 1 and Figure 4 is a view of a second embodiment of the invention, and Figure 5 is a view of a third embodiment of the invention.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments
The device 10 shown in Figures 1 to 3 is formed of a resiliently deformable thermoplastic material and is of concertina, tubular form. Its lower end is so shaped that it is a close fit in a bath plughole so that, when the device is in position, water will not flow out through the plughole until the level of water in the bath reaches the top of the device 10, the top being open as shown in the drawings. The device may alternatively be formed of rubber, a silicone or other flexible material.
Fitting the device in the plughole instead of fitting a plug in the plughole prevents the bathwater from overflowing. By adjusting the height of the device by extending or retracting the device it is possible to adjust the maximum depth of water in the bath. The device can readily be removed from the plughole without the need to get one's hands wet.
The device 20 shown in Figure 4 is of generally cylindrical form with a tapered lower end so that it is a close fit in the plug hole of a bath. Adjacent the lower end of the main tubular body of the device there is an opening within which there is a mesh or netting 21, and the opening can be closed by sliding a door 22. As shown, the door 22 is arranged to slide horizontally but, in an alternative arrangement, the door 22 could be arranged for vertical sliding movement.
In normal operation, the door 22 is closed and the level of water within the bath can rise to the level of the top of the device, after which the water will flow down through the device. If, however, the door 22 is moved away from its closed position, the water will flow through the opening and the mesh or netting 22 will act as a filter preventing any fluff, hair or other solid particles from flowing down the plughole.
The embodiment shown in Figure 5 comprises a tubular body 30 formed from a thermoplastic or similar material and has a tapered lower end of such dimensions that it is a close fit in the plughole of a bath. The height of the tubular body 30 is such that a significant level of water can be obtained in the bath while a person is having a shower, thus enabling the user to soak his or her feet prior to nail cutting.
Although the body 30 is of tubular form, it can be of other cross-sectional forms above the part that fits in the plughole and, if desired, may include a compartment within which a light or other electrical device is located. It may also be decorated in such a way as to be particularly attractive to young children.
