Detailed Description
Generally speaking, a haptic actuator can be integrated into an electronic device behind a movable element (hereinafter sometimes referred to as the "buttonless section"). The haptic actuator provides a haptic sensation via the buttonless section.
A touch-sensitive screen, which may comprise a layer of rigid or bendable glass or plastic can be wrapped around the buttonless section to seal the electronic device and provide a haptic sensation through the touch-sensitive screen on the side of the electronic device.
The haptic actuator can be triggered by information from a capacitive sensing element, which is typically incorporated in the touch-sensitive screen.
Alternatively, the trigger signal may be received from another sensing mechanism (e.g. force, inductive, contact) or be generated from software (e.g. gaming). Some sensing mechanism may require a deflection of the touch-sensitive screen and buttonless section, which is expected to be compatible with both the properties of bendable glass or plastic as well as the haptic actuator irrespective of the actuation technology used. The haptic sensation is provided through the touch-sensitive screen on actuation.
The use of bendable glass or plastic is particularly beneficial for sealing and improving the haptic actuator performance by reducing the stiffness of one or more of the constraining surfaces of a buttonless section. This applies regardless of whether the bendable glass or plastic is part of a touch-sensitive screen, a touch-sensitive layer, or merely a covering layer.
The above having been said, it is expected that a suitable haptic sensation can still be provided via a relatively rigid glass or plastic.
A suitable flexible glass is one that is 75um thick and has a bend radius from 3mm to 5mm.
The touch-sensitive screen can be attached to the electronic device in various ways, as will now be described.
First example: Complete wrap around Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 a first example of an electronic device 100 will now be described.
Referring in particular to Figure 1, feature 1 represents a haptic actuator, feature 2 represents a body of the electronic device 100, feature 3 represents a movable element, feature 4 represents the screen, and feature 5 represents a sealing element.
Further details of certain aspects of the electronic device 100 are provided in United Kingdom patent application number 1906818.8.
Referring in particular to Figure 2, the movable element 3 is integral with the body 2. In this example, the movable element 3 is elongate. The two ends of the movable element 3 are connected to the body 2 and the two sides of the movable element 3 are separated from the body 2 by respective gaps 22. A cavity 2a is formed in the body to accommodate the haptic actuator 1.
As will be appreciated, the gaps 22 provides the moveable element 3 with the flexibility to move relative to the rest of the body 2 when driven by the haptic actuator 1.
The haptic actuator 1 is configured to provide a haptic sensation via a portion of the screen 4 that is located at a side of the electronic device 100.
The electronic device 100 may be foldable and the side of the electronic device 100 may correspond to a hinge side. The portion of the screen 4 is preferably on the outside when the electronic device 100 is folded closed.
The screen 4 forms at least part of a seal against liquid and/or dust ingress into the body 2.
In this first example, the screen 4 extends around the side of the electronic device 100 and is sealed via the sealing element 5 to the back. This would completely seal the haptic actuator 1 and gives the option for the haptic actuator 1 to be combined with virtual controls displayed on the screen 4.
The sealing element 5 may take any suitable form, e.g. a sheet or membrane of sealing material which may be a flexible membrane seal which may be glued or adhered in position.
Referring in particular to Figure 3, other possible locations 6 for the haptic actuator 1 on the side of the electronic device 100 are illustrated.
Second, third and fourth examples: Layers front and back Referring to Figures 4A, 4B and 4C respectively, second, third and fourth examples of the electronic device 100 will now be described.
In each of these examples, there is a layer 4 including rigid or bendable glass or plastic on the front and back of the electronic device 100 that is joined by a seal 5 on the movable element 3. The front layer 4 may correspond a touch-sensitive 35 screen and the back layer 4 may correspond to a covering layer.
The location of the join 10 could be anywhere around the movable element 3, as per the second and third examples. This would completely seal the haptic actuator 1 and could allow it to be combined with virtual controls accessible from the touch screen.
As per the fourth example, the two layers 4 do not have to meet, so the side of the electronic device 100 may still incorporate a metal strip (e.g. to provide an antenna). In this instance, the two layers 4 may be each separately connected to the movable element via a sealing element 5.
Fifth and sixth examples: Front layer only Referring to Figures 5A and 5B respectively, fifth and sixth examples of the electronic device 100 will now be described.
In these examples, the screen 4 on the one side of the electronic device 100 is joined to the movable element 3 at any part via a seal S. In the fifth example, the haptic actuator 1 (in particular the second gap 22) would require sealing from the other side from the back of the phone or a second seal 50.
In the sixth example, the body 2 and movable element 3 are connected on three sides (including the side 23), i.e. there is no second gap and no need for a second seal 50.
Seventh and eighth examples: Piston interface Referring to Figures 6A and 6B respectively, seventh and eighth examples of the electronic device 100 will now be described.
In these examples, the screen 4 is around a "SIM-style" section and there is a hole in the body 2 that contains a piston 12. The screen 4 can go all the way around (as in Figure 6A) or two pieces can be joined over/on the piston (as in Figure 6B).
Discussion Manufacturers are moving towards electronic devices 100 with no buttons on their sides. The configurations described herein provide a haptic sensation through the side of a so-called buttonless electronic device while also sealing it.
Some electronic devices are being made with a touch-sensitive screen that extends around the side of the electronic device. The solution can provide a haptic sensation through the touch-sensitive screen.
Other variations It will be appreciated that there may be many other variations of the above-described embodiments.
For example, a separate implementation technique may have to be employed if the glass folds in the opposite direction.
The haptic actuator could interface directly with the screen without an element in between.
The screen 4 may be straight and/or curved where it covers the haptic assembly 1.
Although not presently claimed, the electronic device may comprise a flexible glass or plastic layer that is not touch-sensitive.
