Description

Personal protection cove's for adults and children Technical Field [0001] This invention relates generally to a protective covering for an adult or child and in particular, but not exclusively to a protective insert for an adult's push-chair or similar and to for a child or infant carrier such as a carrycot, pram, baby-buggy, stroller, push-chair or Moses basket.
Background Art
[0002] W02220/175588 describes and claims a hood for a child carrier comprising a pair of side walls, a top wall and a rear wall defining a compartment therebetween; a first fan unit comprising a fan configured, in use, to draw ambient external air therethrough into the compartment, and a second fan unit comprising a fan configured, in use, to draw therethrough air from within the compartment to the environment outside the compartment; said first and second fan units being mounted and sealed within openings in a different walls such that, in use, an air flow path is defined through a volume of said compartment between said first and second fan units.
[0003] The cover is removable and as a result there will be is a gap between the hood and the carrier through which pollutants and infections could reach the interior of the defined compartment.
Summary of invention
[0004] According to the present invention a protective overall covering for an adult or child comprises a compartment formed of a cover portion, opposed side portions and a rear portion, the cover portion being detachably joined to the opposed side portions, and the rear portion joined to the opposed side portions, the compartment having one or more apertures in in which one or more filters are mounted to filter air passing into the compartment and the rear portion comprising spacer fabric.
[0005] In one application a compartment according to the invention is an insert for a wheeled conveyance.
[0006] In such an insert for a wheeled conveyance for a child or a child carrier, the rear portion is provided with sealable slots through which straps of a child carrier may be passed to hold the child in position in the child carrier.
[0007] In child carrier, may for example be a wheeled carrier such as a buggy, pushchair or stroller, or it may be a back carrier for a child or a carrier to be place in front of an adult.
[0008] The insert compartment according to the invention can also be used with a pram of cot, or carry cot, in the latter context, cover portion can be fitted with straps to attach to a handle of a carry cot to prevent the cover collapsing onto the face of child in the compartment.
[0009] One or more of the apertures can be fitted also with a pump, circulating air into or out of the insert compartment though one or more of the filters. [0010] Normally for maximum anti-pollution and anti-contagion effects all apertures are provided with filters.
[0011] In addition, the filters can be provided with a gauze or mesh coated with or containing materials to capture and absorb organic and inorganic air pollutants such as titanium dioxide.
[0012] The insert compartment of the present invention represents a considerable enhancement to previous devices for protecting children and infants from pollutants in that they are surrounded by the compartment and isolated from the pollutants. Furthermore, the use of filters and gauzes or meshed as described further reduces the likely ingress of pollutant into the insert compartment and substantially reduces the risk of infections from contagions.
Brief description of drawings
[0013] Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stroller in which an insert compartment according to the invention is mounted.
[0014] Figure 2 shows the provision of access to the inside of the insert compartment; [0015] Figure 3 shows the inside of the insert compartment with support straps in place; [0016] Figure 4 is a vertical section through the stroller and compartment of figures 1 to 3; [0017] Figure 5 shows an insert compartment according to the invention mounted in a carry cot; [0018] Figure 6 shows the provision of access to the inside of the insert compartment of figure 5; [0019] Figure 7 is a vertical section though the carry cot and compartment of figures 5 and 6; and [0020] Figure 8 shows a vertical section through a filter used in the invention.
Description of embodiments
[0021] In figures 1 to 4 an insert compartment 12 according to the invention inserted on a child's pushchair or stroller 10. The insert compartment 12 comprises a cover portion 14, opposed side portions 16 and a rear portion 18. The side portions 16 have apertures 22 in which filters (40 as shown in figure 6) are fitted. The cover portion 14 is sewn at its top edge to the rear portion 18 and is attached to the side portions 16 and at its bottom to a rim 20 around the rear portion by zips 24. For additional protection, the zip joint thus formed may be covered with a flap, not shown, and sealed with hook and loop joints (for example Velcroi0). The side portions 16 are sewn onto the rim 20 around the rear portion 18 (both inside the carry cot 30 as shown). The cover 14 and side portions 16 are normally of aluminium polyester heat reflective material, to prevent a child in the compartment overheating in sunlight, although in colder climates PVC could be considered for use. The cover 14 should be of clear material.
[0022] The spacer material of the rear portion 18 is a spacer fabric using a microfilament yarn between two fabrics which creates a breathable "microclimate" between the layers. Heat and vapour are allowed to leave the inside of the compartment 12. A suitable material is obtainable from KBT Limited (trading) as FabricUK of Birmingham, UK.
[0023] Slots 26 in the rear portion 18 allow straps 28 of the pushchair or stroller to be passed through, to retain a child and the insert compartment 12 in place in the pushchair or stroller 10. As an added precaution, the slots 26 in rear portion 18 are sealable with hook and loop joints.
[0024] A similar insert compartment to that shown is figures 1 to 3 can be designed for use in connection with carriers for children which are mounted on an adult's back or front.
[0025] Similarly, an insert compartment to that shown in figures 1 to 3 can be designed for a child's car seat.
[0026] Although not shown in figures 1 to 3, one or more of apertures 22 and filters 40 may be fitted with battery driven motors to maintain and air flow through the compartment 12.
[0027] If not required, the insert compartment 12 can be removed from the stroller or pushchair 10.
[0028] Withing the scope of the invention, an insert compartments can be designed for use in a hand held child or infant conveyance such as a carry cot, or Moses basket, or for use in infant of child's wheeled conveyance such as a pram.
[0029] One such design for a carry cot is shown in figures 4 and 5 [0030] In figures 5 to 7 an insert compartment 12 according to the invention to protect an infant or child in a carry cot 30 comprises a cover portion 14, opposed side portions 16 and a rear portion 18 comprising spacer fabric. The side portions 16 have apertures 22 in which filters (40 as shown in figure 6) are fitted. The cover portion 14 is sewn at its top edge to the rear portion 18 and is attached to the side portions 16 and at its bottom to a rim 20 around the rear portion by zips 24. For additional protection, the zip joint thus formed may be covered with a flap, not shown, and sealed with hook and loop joints (for example Velcro0). The side portions 16 are sewn onto the rim 20 around the rear portion 18 (both inside the carry cot 30 as shown). The material choices for the cover portion 14 and side portions 16 are as previously described.
[0031] In example of figures 4 and 5 the carry cot 30 has a handle 32. The cover portion 14 is fitted with Velcro® straps to engage around the handle and to prevent the cover potion collapsing onto a child's head. Similar straps can
S
be fitted to the cover shown in figures 1 to 3, if it is wished for the compartment shown in those figures to be transferrable to a cot or pram.
[0032] Although not shown in figures 1 to 5, one or more of the apertures 22 and filters 40 may be fitted with battery driven motors to maintain and air flow through the insert compartment 12.
[0033] A compartment as discussed above can be designed for other purposes, such as for an adult's wheelchair, or for a power buggy used by an adult. A compartment as described may also be used for protective purposed for adults or children when lying in the sun as when the cover and side pieces are made of aluminium polyester heat reflective material, sun-burning risk could be eliminated or considerably reduced, and risks from pollution and contagions substantially reduced also [0034] The filters 40 used in the present invention and installed in the apertures 22 are shown in figure 6. The comprise an external protective cover 42 in a housing 44 with a medical grade filter 46, an N85 filter was used in the apparatus shown in the figures but other grades of filter can be considered. The filter 46 is backed by a metal gauze 48 coated with titanium dioxide, the filter 46 and gauze 48 being mounted in a filter and gauze locator 50 fitted to the filter housing 44. The rear of the filter is protected by and internal protective cover 52. Other designs for mounting the filter 46 and gauze 48 and fitting them within the apertures 22, will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
[0035] The purpose the titanium dioxide is to capture and absorb organic and inorganic air pollutants
