Abstract
A mounting spike 6,7 device which is attachable to a bracket base plate 5 and suitable for mounting an electrical junction box via mounting holes 14,15. The base plate can include a plurality of mountings (1,4. Fig. 1) for ground spikes 6,7 or a single centrally mounted ground spike 8, which may be detachable. In use the ground spikes are inserted into the ground and the plate 2 prevents the junction box from being pushed too far into the ground to keep the junction box above ground level. A luminaire may be mounted on top of the overall device.
Description
Junction box mounting spike Description
This invention relates to a device to allow junction boxes to be mounted securely in the ground.
Junction boxes are a necessity for outdoor wiring installations. Often junction boxes are mounted to fixed structures such as walls and fence posts. There can be often times where such fixed structures are not available, for example within a large planting area or in the middle of a green. In these cases junction boxes are often left loose and can easily be knocked or pulled around. To overcome this issue, the present invention proposes a mounting ground spike for junction boxes to provide a permanent fixing. US20130074426A1 represents a ground spike as an example but lacks any possibe mounting mechanism for a junction box, or even mounting a junction box in such a way to allow cables to utilise appropriate glands from underneath.
The ground spike is preferably a bladed spike formation for inserting into soft ground, narrowing at the insertion end to allow ease of insertion into the ground. It could also consist of a round spike or a round spike with a spiral -similar to US4803812A.
The ground spike may have two mounting holes to secure the junction box into place, but may also utilise more or less fixings as required for the box.
The junction box mounting portion of the spike may be detachable from the ground spike itself, allowing different materials to be used in it's construction if desired.
The invention may also allow mounting a luminare on it's top.
The invention will now be described solely by the way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a detachable junction box mounting top, with two mounting holes for the junction box itself and options for 1 or 2 ground mounting spikes, Figure 2 shows a detachable junction box mounting top with two ground mounting spikes fitted, Figure 3 shows a junction box mount with a single ground spike, Figure 4 shows a detectable junction mounting top with junction box and luminare mount.
In figure 1, (1) two mounting holes are provided for fixings to the junction box. (2) shows a base plate which prevents the unit from being pushed any further into the ground so that the junction box can sit adequately above ground. Figure 1A represents a top down view showing several mounting holes (4) for allowing separate ground spikes to be fixed to a detachable top.
In figure 2, two detachable mounting spikes (6 and 7) are pre fitted using 4 fixings. Again like in Figure 1 (2), (5) shows the plate which stops the spike from being pushed any further. Two spikes or more spikes can be used to provide extra security. Again like figure 1, (1) in this particular example two mounting holes are provided for the junction box.
Figure 3 shows 1 detachable mounting spike (8) fitted with two fixings, mounted centrally. (9) again prevents the unit from being inserted into the ground any further then is necessary.
In figure 4, (9) two mounting holes are provided for fixings to the junction box. Figure 4A, showing a top down view of the same unit, in this example has an extra mounting space on the top (13) for a luminare utilising 3 fixing hole options (10, 11 and 12).
The degree of stability can be varied by changing the number of ground spikes or the length, as well as the security of fixing can be varied from 1 up to any number of fixings suitable for the junction box itself.
The junction box mounting sections may be detachable or moulded as one complete part with the ground mounting spikes.
The invention in these examples are made of plastic but could be made from other corrosion resistant materials such as metals with a corrosion resistant coating, metals which already have an inbuilt corrosion resistance such as Stainless steel or even clay and ceramics.
