Abstract

A forced air turbine electricity generator for use with a vehicle e.g. an electrically powered vehicle having an air flow deflector 1, a turbine rotor 2, an alternator 4 or dynamo, and casing 3, 6. Air is driven into the assembly when the vehicle moves forward, wherein the upper 3 and lower 6 casing guides the incoming air. The air deflector may have fixed vanes, and diverts air flow to assist rotation of the rotor 2, and blocks air from acting against the rotation of the rotor; wherein the deflector is mounted to the upper casing 3 so that its bottom edge aligns half way up the height of the rotors 2. The lower casing 6 may have drain holes. One or more air turbines can be fitted to a variety of vehicles e.g. cars, vans, lorry, trains or trams; and may be fitted into or onto the vehicle, and any orientation e.g. vertically or horizontally. The alternator may be driven by a drive belt 5; by the rotor shaft; or be an integral part of the turbine rotor 2. The electrical power produced is used for battery charging and/or providing power to the vehicles electrical systems.

Description

AIR FLOW TURBINE ELECTRICITY GENERATOR
Technical field
This invention relates to air flow turbine electricity generators fitted to but not restricted to electrically powered vehicles.
Background
Electric vehicles have become more efficient due to improved battery technology and clever power management systems. As a result electric vehicles can now travel for many miles before recharging. All vehicles when moving are subjected to air resistance, commonly known as drag. The air flow turbine electricity generator, uses some of this drag to produce electrical power. The electrical power produced is used for supplementary battery charging and or providing power to the vehicles other electrical systems. The supplementary electrical power produced, reduces the dependence of the battery as a power source, thereby extending the range or distance travelled before a conventional recharge is necessary. One or more air flow turbine electricity generators can be fitted to a variety of vehicles where a supplementary supply of electrical power is required. For example cars, vans, buses, heavy goods vehicles, trams or trains.
Essential Technical Features According to the present invention there is provided an air flow turbine electricity generator comprising an air flow deflector, a turbine rotor, an alternator or dynamo, upper and lower casings. Means for reasonably securing these components together as an assembly within or on a vehicle. The turbine being operated to produce electricity by means of air flowing through it, when the said vehicle is travelling.
Example
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example referring to the accompanying drawings.
Fig.1 An exploded view of the air flow turbine electricity generator.
Fig.2 A side on view of the air flow turbine electricity generator assembly, showing some components in cross section for clarity.
Fig.3 A cut away view of an electrically powered vehicle with an air flow turbine electricity generator in situ.
As shown in fig.3 the air flow turbine electricity generator is located in the front area of an electrically powered vehicle 7 under the hood or bonnet. It is positioned so that air flowing through the front grill of the vehicle 7 will enter the air flow turbine electricity generator when the vehicle is moving forward.
The present invention shown in figs. I and 2 is comprised of an air flow deflector 1 mounted so that its bottom edge aligns half way up the turbine rotor 2, as shown in fig.2. The air flow deflector 1 serves two purposes. It blocks the flow of air from acting against the rotation of the turbine rotor 2 and diverts that same flow of air so that it assists the rotation of the turbine rotor 2. The inclusion of the air flow deflector 1 within the assembly is essential to make a significant contribution to the output torque of the turbine rotor 2.
The upper casing 3 is included to prevent any stray air flow from entering the turbine at the wrong point and acting against the rotation of the turbine rotor 2. The upper casing 3 is secured to the top of the air flow deflector 1 by any means which will provide a good seal such as, screws, bolts or clips.
The lower casing 6 guides air flowing into the lower half of the turbine rotor 2 it also contains that moving air, until it passes out of the air flow turbine electricity generator. The lower casing 6 will have a number of drainage holes situated at its lowest points to allow the accumulation of any rain water to quickly escape.
As shown in figs.l and 2 the turbine rotor 2 is fitted with a pulley which operates the alternator drive belt 5. The alternator drive belt 5 drives the alternator 4 via the alternator pulley. The drawings show the alternator 4 as a separate component to the turbine rotor 2. An alternative arrangement would be to have an alternator which is directly driven on the same shaft as the turbine rotor 2 or as an integral part of the turbine rotor 2.
Electrical power is produced by the air flow turbine when the electric vehicle 7 as shown in fig.3 is moving forward. As the speed of the electric vehicle 7 increases the amount of available power generated by the air flow turbine electricity generator also increases. This supplementary supply of electrical power can be utilised for charging the electric vehicles batteries and or supplying other electrical systems within the electric vehicle 7.
