Sliding-jaw wrenches; jaw faces.-A wrench of the kind comprising a head carrying a fixed jaw and a slidable jaw actuated by a lever pivoted to the head and having a round end engaging fork arms on the sliding jaw, is provided with one or more spring-pressed balls between the round lever end and the rounded recess between the fork arms to maintain contact between the lever end and sliding jaw and reduce lost motion. The lever d pivoted at c to the head b has a round end d' engaging the curved recess e<3> between the fork arms f, f<1> on the sliding jaw e, which has a lateral groove e<2> guided on a rib on the head. One or more holes are provided in the edge of the round end d<1> to receive a spring-pressed ball or balls g, and the hole or holes may be provided with a movable cage h, Fig. 6, having an internal flange to prevent loss of the ball when the handle is removed. The fork arms may be slightly convergent and the shoulders of the lever head reduced at d<2>. The jaws may have re-entrant angles, one of which e' is reduced in length to facilitate engagement of the nut between the jaws. If desired, the spring-pressed balls may be mounted in the jaw recess.
