Description
MOUNTING DEVICE, SYSTEM AND METHOD
This invention relates to a mounting device, system, and method, for fitting boards to a structure, in particular but not exclusively a caravan or static/mobile house unit or to decking structures around such caravans or static/mobile house units.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
There are various mounting methods for fitting boards/planks to cover or close the gap between the underside of a caravan or static/mobile house unit (or associated decking platforms) and the ground on which it stands. However, a typical problem with these is that the boards are individually affixed to structures by fastening means, such as screws or nails and that may damage permanently the boards, for example, during maintenance, or replacement, or when removing for temporary access. In addition, the existing methods are slow as each end of each board must be carefully positioned before it is fixed in place. Suitable measurements are also required to affix correctly the boards to the structures and relative to each other or the appearance and/or function may be degraded.
An aim of the present invention is therefore to provide a mounting device, system and method that serve to address the above problems.
STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
Firstly, the present invention provides a mounting device for fitting boards to a structure, the device comprising:
an elongated body being attachable to the structure, wherein the body includes a plurality of brackets arranged in cooperating pairs along a length of the body, each pair of brackets defining clipping/friction means to detachably secure at least one board thereto, and wherein the pairs are adjacent and spaced from each other such that one or more boards are fitted at predetermined positions in a continuous pattern.
Each of the pair of brackets may comprise lugs facing inwardly towards each other to allow the at least one board to be fixed in place therebetween.
-2 Preferably, the brackets and lugs are resiliently deformable to flex outwardly such that the at least one board is removably fitted to the pair of brackets. This allows the boards to be detachably fitted to the device without the need for separate fixings. This also enables easy and quick installation and removal or replacement of the boards for example for temporary access. The boards are held firmly in pairs of brackets but may be clipped into or out of the pairs of brackets as required to assemble or disassemble a screen or fence formed by such boards.
A gap may be defined between each adjacent pair of brackets to allow the pair of brackets to flex/bend whilst clipping or unclipping a board. The gap, for example, provides a gap between adjacent mounted boards which allows natural ventilation underneath a caravan or building house unit whilst also facilitating installation and removal of the boards. The length of the gap is preferably but not exclusively about 10 mm. Other gap sizes are possible.
The length of the device may be adjustable as may be the number of pairs of brackets provided thereon. The length may be adjusted in use, preferably by cutting the body along a line defined between adjacent pairs of brackets and/or joining together or aligning at least one portion of the body with one or more body. This allows the overall length of the body and the number of mountable boards to be adjusted to fit/cover different areas.
Pairs of brackets on a body may be spaced in any way, but preferably the pairs of brackets may be equispaced along the length of the body. Preferably, the body may comprise five pairs of brackets equally spaced apart in a regular linear pattern. However, it will be appreciated that different arrangements are possible. The arrangement of the pairs of brackets on the body allows boards to be mounted so that they are equally spaced without the need for individual measuring/spacing.
The structure may be anywhere that such boards need to be mounted, but preferably it is a building, or a caravan or static/mobile house unit. Preferably, the structure and/or the boards once mounted are substantially vertical. The structure may be the vertical edge or face around a raised decking construction
-3or may be designed to cover the gap between a static caravan and the ground. The structure to which the body is attached may include, for example, a support post, leg, or balustrade, etc. The structure may be arranged horizontally or along different directions.
Preferably, the body is attached to the structure by suitable fixing means. Preferably, means to cooperate with such fixing means are arranged along the length of the body to ensure each pair of brackets may be fixed regardless of the desired/cut length of the device to be fixed to the structure.
The body and plurality of brackets are preferably made by injection moulding but could also be an extruded profile which may then cut to form individual elongated devices. The body is also preferably made of a resiliently deformable material (for example, plastic or Glass Reinforced Plastic, GRP) to allow the lugs and brackets to flex the required amount.
The boards may be cladding or skirting boards/planks. The boards, are preferably a ranch style board, that may be made of plastic, or GRP, or wood, or other materials suitable for building purposes, including thermally-insulated materials. Boards may have different properties or features, including different lengths, materials, colours or aesthetic characteristics.
According to a second aspect, the present invention also provides a mounting system for fitting one or more board to one or more structure, wherein the system comprises one or more mounting device as described above and one or more board. This allows boards to be mounted to one or more of the structure as described above.
Additionally, the present invention further provides a method of fitting boards to a structure as described above, the method comprising:
providing one or more mounting device as described above, and one or more board;
fixing the or each mounting device to the structure, preferably by fastening means; and
-4clipping the one or more boards to one or more pair of brackets on the of the mounting device.
The method may further comprise adjusting the length of the mounting device, preferably by cutting the body along a line between adjacent pair of brackets and/or aligning/joining together at least one portion of the body with one or more like body.
Preferably at least two mounting devices are provided and mounted to the structure (or sperate structures) at spaced locations such that a board (or boards) may each be supported by at least two pairs of brackets on separate mounting devices.
It will be appreciated that a linear array of pairs of brackets suitably spaced apart along the length of the device allows skirting or cladding boards to be easily and quickly fitted to a structure at predetermined positions in a continuous pattern without requiring other fixing means and measurements for the boards. By having at least two spaced mounting devices a longer board may be connected securely to or adjacent the structure by relatively narrow mounting devices at appropriate spacings.
In addition to swift mounting the present invention equally enables fast and easy removal of one or more board. This could be for access (especially when the boards cover the space below a raised deck or mobile home) or for replacement/reinstallation. Due to the clipping such mounting and removal does not diminish the structural integrity and/or aesthetic characteristics of the boards.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE DRAWINGS
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of an embodiment of a mounting device according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the embodiment of Figure 1;
-5Figure 3 is a side view of the embodiment of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged view of the detail A of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of an assembly of boards using a mounting device and system according to the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 shows a mounting device 100 for fitting boards/planks (preferably but not exclusively ranch-style boards) to a structure. The device comprises an elongated body 10 having a plurality of brackets arranged in cooperating pairs 15 and 15’ equispaced along a length 12 of the body in a vertical direction 11.
The length 12 of the device and the number of pairs of brackets 15 and 15’ may be reduced by cutting the body along a line between adjacent pairs of brackets. This would create an edge such as that numbered 16. More than one body may be mounted next to each other (with end edges 16 adjacent) to provide more pairs of brackets.
The body can be fixed to a structure by fasteners that are received through fixing holes 13. In this embodiment, four fixing holes are provided for each pair of brackets (although not all need be used), allowing a device cut to any desired length 12 to be fixed to a structure.
Figure 2 shows a rear perspective view of the mounting device of the embodiment of Figure 1. The body 10 has a back face abutting at least a part of a structure 50, 60 as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 3 shows a side view of the mounting device of the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, and Figure 4 depicts an enlarged detailed view of a part of the embodiment of Figure 3.
As it can be clearly seen from Figure 4, each bracket upstands from the body 10 and has a lug 18 extending inwardly towards its cooperating pair such that together they grasp opposed edges of a board to hold it in place. The brackets
-6are resiliently deformable to flex outwardly by a small degree thereby enabling a board to be clipped or unclipped quickly and with the appropriate degree of ease.
Figure 5 shows an assembly formed from the components of the mounting system and some possible board arrangements. For the avoidance of doubts, Figure 5 shows an unfinished installation. There is shown a mounting system 200 for fitting boards 25-27 to upright structural posts 50 and 60 arranged around a raised decking construction 70 of a caravan or static or mobile house unit (not shown) between the decking construction 70 and the ground 80.
In this embodiment, two mounting devices 100 are affixed to external faces of a corner post 50 and one mounting device 100 is affixed to the external face of an intermediate post 60. It will be appreciated that the device can be affixed on either front, rear, or side faces or a combination of the above. Four boards 25 are clipped to four pairs of brackets of the device 100 that is fixed to the corner post 50. Boards 26 and 27 are each fitted to at least two pairs of brackets, but while the board 26 extends past the pair of brackets (closest to the ground 80) on post 60 the board 27 ends at about the midpoint of the adjacent pair of brackets in that post 60. The latter configuration conveniently allows two boards to be retained adjacent each other end to end by one pair of brackets only. This can be used in a long run where a single board is not long enough to cover the entire length.
To install boards in this way, the required number of mounting devices (which may have been cut to the required length) are connected to the posts. Then the require number of boards (cut to the required length) are connected to one or more pair or brackets (usually at least 2 pairs on separate bodies) to define/cover the required boarded area. A board may be engaged with a pair of brackets by angling the board such that one elongate edge engages behind the lug 18 of one bracket 15. Then the opposed elongate edge of the board may be pushed toward the opposed bracket 15’ until the brackets (or board) flex sufficiently to allow the board to engage behind that lug 18 of the opposed bracket 15’. The reverse process may be adopted to unclip a board.
-7 The boards are easily fitted to cover/hide the underside of a caravan/building construction in a continuous and predetermined pattern without requiring measurements or destructive fastening means (which may also permanently deteriorate the boards during affixing and removing).
It will be understood that any features described in relation to any particular embodiment may be featured in combination with other embodiments.
