Abstract

The barrier includes an anchoring member 110, impermeable to water, for positioning around the edge of a building, and a water impermeable skirt 350/330, attachable to the anchoring member at one end 352 and attachable to an external wall 121 of a building, around which it is used, at the other end thereof 332 to cover a lower portion of the building wall and prevent the ingress of flood water. The skirt may be a single flexible sheet or membrane, or may have a first portion 350 removable attached to a second portion 330 via a zip 360. The skirt may have a deployed configuration in which it is secured to the building wall, extending from the anchoring portion, and a collapsed configuration in which it is rolled or folded in a dedicated container, or the second portion 330 may be removed and stored elsewhere. The anchoring portion may be a plurality of buried interlocking blocks 110 extending around the perimeter of the building with a locking recess for housing the bottom of the skirt and an elastic fixing mechanism 140 such as a string or rope also extending around the perimeter of the building.

Description

A flood barrier arrangement and a method of preventing flooding of a structure
The invention relates to flood barriers. More specifically, the invention relates to a flood barrier arrangement and a method of preventing flooding of a structure, in particular, a residential building.
There are various solutions for flood prevention known in the art. Flood barriers may be placed temporarily or permanently around individual buildings or at building entrances to keep floodwaters from entering those buildings. A wall constructed of sandbags is an example of a temporary barrier. A reinforced concrete wall is an example of a permanent barrier.
The above solutions of the prior art however have several significant disadvantages. Constructing the wall of sandbags takes time, the sandbags usually need to be prepared and delivered from a remote storage and, when the flooding is over, the wall needs to be removed. Some temporary solutions may also not be able to provide structural stability and ease of setup if consisting of several connection points and sections. Permanent solutions, such as a concrete wall, are expensive and burdensome when no longer needed, in particular when used to protect residential buildings.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a technical solution to the issues outlined above.
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a reconfigurable flood barrier arrangement for protecting a structure from flooding, the arrangement comprising: at least one anchoring member impermeable to water; a water impermeable skirt, which is arranged to extend around the structure so as to cover at least a portion of an exterior of the structure, the skirt being securable along thereof to the anchoring member and securable along a distal region thereof to an exterior of the structure so as to form a watertight barrier.
In an embodiment, the skirt is reconfigurable between a first configuration, in which the distal region of the skirt is disposed proximate the anchoring member, and a second configuration in which the distal region of the skirt is extended from the anchoring member.
In an embodiment, the anchoring member is positionable around the structure, between the exterior thereof and a water drainage associated with the structure.
In an embodiment, the anchoring member comprises a locking recess for accommodating the proximal region of the skirt.
In an embodiment, the arrangement further comprises an elastic tether for securing the proximal region of the skirt within the locking recess.
In an embodiment, the elastic tether is impermeable to water.
In an embodiment, the anchoring member is positionable below ground.
In an embodiment, the anchoring member is arranged to extend around a periphery of the structure.
In an embodiment, the anchoring member is integrally formed with a foundation of the structure.

In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of preventing flooding of a structure using a flood barrier arrangement, the method comprising the steps of: providing at least one anchoring member impermeable to liquid; providing a water impermeable skirt, which is arranged to extend around the structure so as to cover at least a portion of an exterior of the structure, securing a proximal region of the skirt to the anchoring member; securing a distal region of the skirt to an exterior of the structure so as to form a watertight seal.
In an embodiment, the method further comprises reconfiguring the skirt between a first configuration in which a distal region of the skirt is disposed proximate the anchoring member, and a second configuration, in which the distal region of the skirt is extended from the anchoring member.
In an embodiment, securing a proximal region of the skirt to the anchoring member may further comprise positioning the proximal region of the skirt into a locking recess within the anchoring member and subsequently placing and tensioning an elastic tether within the recess such that the tether presses the region against an internal wall of the recess.
In an embodiment, providing at least one anchoring member may comprise providing a concrete block and moulding a locking recess in the concrete block when concrete in the block is substantially 10% to 20% set.
Whilst the invention has been described above, it extends to any inventive combination of features set out above or in the following description. Although illustrative embodiments of the invention are described in detail herein with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to these precise embodiments.
Furthermore, it is contemplated that a particular feature described either individually or as part of an embodiment can be combined with other individually described features, or parts of other embodiments, even if the other features and embodiments make no mention of the particular feature. Thus, the invention extends to such specific combinations not already described.
The invention may be performed in various ways, and, by way of example only, embodiments thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of an example flood barrier arrangement 100, which may be used with a variety of different types of structures, such as residential or commercial buildings, for protecting such structures from flooding water. In particular, it is desirable for some residential properties, especially those located on or proximate floodplains, to be equipped with flood barriers that may be easily installed and removed.
The arrangement 100 comprises at least one anchoring member 110 impermeable to liquid. The anchoring member 110, 210 may comprise a block 110, 210 of rigid material which may be shaped so as to continuously encircle an entire building 120. Alternatively, the arrangement 100 may comprise a plurality of anchoring members 110, 210 which may be interconnected so as to define a continuous wall. The anchoring member 110, 210 is positionable around the structure 120, in particular between an external wall 121 thereof and an outlet 123 of a surface water collection channel 122 associated with the structure 120. The anchoring member 110, 210 may be made of concrete, stone or any other material providing rigidity sufficient to ensure prolonged placement under the ground. In particular, the anchoring member 110 may be formed of concrete section which may comprise a width 113 of substantially 10cm and a height 112 of substantially 30cm, for example. Such a block 110 may be positionable below ground where it may be secured to or formed integrally with a foundation of the structure (figure 4).
The concrete block 110 may comprise fastening means 114 for sealably securing the concrete block 110 to a further concrete block 210. A continuous barrier may be installed from a plurality of blocks 110. The blocks 110 in such a case can be interconnected with the fastening means 114 which may be located on a side surface 115, 215 of each block 110, 210, for example (figure 5), such that the locking recess 111 is aligned with a locking recess 211 of the further concrete block 210. Alternatively, the anchoring member 110 may comprise a continuous and uniform wall 110 (figure 1) encircling the structure 120.
The arrangement 100 further comprises a skirt 130 comprising material impermeable to liquid. The skirt 130 is adapted for extending around the building 120, for example by unrolling, so as to cover at least a portion of an external wall of the structure 120, wherein a first portion 131 of the skirt 130 is securable to the anchoring member 110. In particular, the first portion 131 may be secured to a locking recess 111 located on a top side of the concrete block 110, wherein the locking recess 111 may be adapted to accommodate the first portion 131 of the skirt 130. The recess 111 may comprise a width 116 of substantially 12mm and a depth 117 of substantially 30mm (figure 2), and may also extend along the entire length of the block 110.
The arrangement 100 may further comprise a fixing mechanism 140 for securing the first portion 131 of the skirt 130 to the anchoring member 110. In particular, the fixing mechanism 140 may comprise an elastic string, rope or tether 140 for securing the first portion 131 of the skirt 130 to the locking recess 111 of the concrete block 110. The elastic string 140 may be impermeable to liquid. Alternatively, the fixing mechanism 140 may comprise a wedge (not shown) for securing the proximal region of the skirt within the recess.
To ensure durability and a high degree of water-tightness, the skirt 130 may comprise a sheet of material, which may have a woven fabric including a plurality of reinforcement threads interwoven at intervals in a crosshatch pattern. The skirt 130 may also be coated with polyurethane.
In an embodiment, the skirt 130 is reconfigurable between a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration, a distal region 132 of the skirt 130 is disposed proximate to the anchoring member 110. In particular, the skirt 130 may be folded or rolled such that it may be stored between an external wall of the structure and ground for example, to minimise the occupied space, or may be stored in a dedicated, elongated container (not shown). In a second configuration, the second portion 132 of the skirt 130 can be unfolded, extended and secured to an external wall of the structure 120 so as to form a watertight seal.
Figure 6 illustrates a method 200 of preventing flooding of a structure using a flood barrier arrangement, which may be used with different types of structures, such as residential or commercial buildings, for protecting such structures from flooding water. At step 201, at least one anchoring member impermeable to liquid is provided. In particular, at step 202, providing at least one anchoring member may comprise providing a concrete block and moulding a locking recess in the concrete block when concrete in the block is substantially 10% to 20% set. At step 203, a skirt comprising material impermeable to liquid is provided, for extending around the building so as to cover at least a portion of an external wall of the structure. At step 204, a proximal region of the skirt is secured to the anchoring member. Securing the proximal region of the skirt to the anchoring member may comprise: positioning, at step 204a, the proximal region of the skirt into the locking recess within the anchoring member and subsequently placing, at step 204b, and tensioning, at step 204c, an elastic tether within the recess such that the tether compresses the proximal region of the skirt against an internal wall of the recess around the structure. At step 205, the flood barrier arrangement is reconfigured between a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration at step 206, a distal region of the skirt is folded proximate to the anchoring member. In the second configuration at step 207, the distal region of the skirt is secured to an external wall of the structure so as to form a watertight seal.
Figure 7 illustrates a front and side view of an flood barrier arrangement 300 according to a further embodiment of the invention, which may be similarly used with a variety of different types of structures, such as residential or commercial buildings, for protecting such structures from flooding water.
The arrangement 300 is substantially the same as the arrangement 100 described above and so like features have been referenced with the same numerals. The skirt 130 of the arrangement 300 of the further embodiment however, further comprises a first skirt portion 350 and a second skirt portion 330 detachably couplable together via coupling means 360. In particular, a proximal region 331 of the second skirt portion 330 is detachably couplable with a distal region 351 of the first skirt portion 350 using a fastener, such as a zip. The first and second skirt portion 350, 330 is formed of a material impermeable to liquid, and the first skirt portion 350 and the second skirt portion 330 are adapted for extending around the building 120, for example by unrolling, so as to cover at least a portion of an external wall of the structure 120.
The first skirt portion 350 is further securable to the anchoring member 110. In particular, the first skirt portion 350 is securable along proximal region 352 thereof to a locking recess 111 located on a top side of the concrete block 110. The locking recess 111 is adapted to accommodate the proximal region 352 of the first skirt portion 350. The recess 111 comprises a width 116 of substantially 12mm and a depth 117 of substantially 30mm (figure 2), and also extends along the entire length of the block 110.
The arrangement 300 further comprises a fixing mechanism 140 for securing the proximal portion 352 of the first skirt portion 350 to the anchoring member 110. In particular, the fixing mechanism 140 comprises an elastic string, rope or tether 140 similar to the embodiment described above, for securing the proximal portion 352 of the first skirt portion 350 to the locking recess 111 of the concrete block 110. The elastic string 140 may be impermeable to liquid. Alternatively, the fixing mechanism 140 may comprise a wedge (not shown) for securing the proximal region 352 of the first skirt portion 350 within the recess 111.
Figure 8 illustrates a method 400 of preventing flooding of a structure using a flood barrier arrangement 300, which may be used with different types of structures, such as residential or commercial buildings, for protecting such structures from flooding water. At step 401, at least one anchoring member 110 impermeable to liquid is provided. In particular, at step 402, providing at least one anchoring member 110 may comprise providing a concrete block and moulding a locking recess in the concrete block when concrete in the block is substantially 10% to 20% set. At step 403, a first skirt portion 350 and a second skirt portion 330 are provided, for extending around the building so as to cover at least a portion of an external wall of the structure.
At step 404, first skirt portion 350 and second skirt portion 330 are secured to the anchoring member. Securing the first skirt portion 350 and the second skirt portion 330 to the anchoring member 110 comprises: positioning, at step 404a, the proximal region 352 of the first skirt portion 350 into the locking recess 111 within the anchoring member 110 and subsequently placing, at step 404b, and tensioning, at step 404c, an elastic tether 140 within the recess such that the tether 140 compresses the proximal region 352 of the first skirt portion against an internal wall of the recess 111 around the structure. At step 404d, the distal region 352 of the first skirt portion 350 is secured to the proximal end 332 of the second skirt portion 330 by a securing means 360, such as a zip.
At step 405, the second skirt portion 330 of the flood barrier arrangement 300 is reconfigured between a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration at step 406, the first skirt portion 350 is folded proximate to the anchoring member 110 or the structure 120 around which the skirt 130 is placed, while the second skirt portion maybe stored upon the structure or detached from the structure and stored separately. In the second configuration at step 407, the distal region 352 of the first skirt portion 350 is extended from the anchoring member 110 toward the structure 120 and coupled with the proximal region 332 of the second skirt portion 330 using the zip 360, for example. The distal region 331 of the second skirt portion 330 is subsequently secured to an external wall of the structure 120 so as to seal the structure 300 from impending flood water. In this embodiment, the detachable coupling of the skirt portions 350,330 reduces the space required to store the skirt proximate the anchoring member 110 and thus minimises the aesthetic impact of the arrangement 300 to the exterior look of the structure.

Claims (21)

Claims
1. A reconfigurable flood barrier arrangement for protecting a structure from flooding, the arrangement comprising:
at least one anchoring member impermeable to water;
a water impermeable skirt, which is arranged to extend around the structure so as to cover at least a portion of an exterior of the structure, the skirt being securable along a proximal region thereof to the anchoring member and securable along a distal region thereof to an exterior of the structure so as to form a watertight barrier.
2. An arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the skirt is reconfigurable between a first configuration, in which the distal region of the skirt is disposed proximate the anchoring member, and a second configuration in which the distal region of the skirt is extended from the anchoring member.
3. An arrangement according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the anchoring member is positionable around the structure, between the exterior thereof and a water drainage associated with the structure.
4. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the anchoring member comprises a locking recess for accommodating the proximal region of the skirt.
5. An arrangement according to claim 4, further comprising an elastic tether for securing the proximal region of the skirt within the locking recess.
6. An arrangement according to claim 5, wherein the elastic tether is impermeable to water.
7. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the anchoring member is positionable below ground.
8. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the anchoring member is arranged to extend around a periphery of the structure.
9. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the anchoring member is integrally formed with a foundation of the structure.
10. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the anchoring member comprises a plurality of anchoring elements, each element comprising fastening means for sealably securing an anchoring element to a further anchoring element.
11. An arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the skirt comprises a first portion and a second portion which are detachably couplable.
12. An arrangement according to claim 10, wherein the first skirt portion is securable along a proximal region thereof to the anchoring member.
13. An arrangement according to claim 10 or 11, wherein the second skirt portion is securable along a distal region thereof to an exterior of the structure.
14. An arrangement according to claim 13 wherein the proximal region of the second skirt portion is detachably couplable with a distal region of the first skirt portion via coupling means.
15. An arrangement according to claim 14, wherein the coupling means comprises a zip fastener.
16. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the skirt comprises a polyurethane coating.
17. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the skirt comprises a woven fabric comprising a plurality of reinforcement threads interwoven at intervals in a crosshatch pattern.
18. An arrangement according to claim 2, wherein, in the second configuration, the skirt is arranged in a rolled configuration.
19. A method of preventing flooding of a structure using a flood barrier arrangement, the method comprising the steps of:
providing at least one anchoring member impermeable to liquid;
providing a water impermeable skirt, which is arranged to extend around the structure so as to cover at least a portion of an exterior of the structure, securing a proximal region of the skirt to the anchoring member;
securing a distal region of the skirt to an exterior of the structure so as to form a watertight 5 seal.

A method according to claim 19, further comprising the step of reconfiguring the skirt between a first configuration in which a distal region of the skirt is disposed proximate the anchoring member, and a second configuration, in which the distal region of the skirt is extended from the anchoring member.

A method according to claim 19, wherein securing a proximal region of the skirt to the anchoring member further comprises positioning the proximal region of the skirt into a locking recess within the anchoring member and subsequently placing and tensioning an elastic tether within the recess such that the tether compresses the proximal region of the skirt against an internal wall of the recess around the structure.
