In some embodiments the method comprises the further step of positioning a hair-curling loop circumferentially around the main body such that the main body and hair-curling loop are substantially concentric.
In order that the present invention may be more fully understood specific embodiments will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings, of which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a main ring of a device made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view of a first side of a hair-curling loop for use with the ring of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view of the second side of the hair-curling loop of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a plan view showing a device of the present invention comprising five hair-curling loops attached to a main ring;
Figures 5 and 6 are perspective views of the head of a user illustrating how a user may use device comprising four hair-curling loops;
Figure 7 is a plan view of the device illustrated in Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a device made in accordance with the present invention incorporating the main ring of Figure 1 and a larger hair-curling loop.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the head of a user illustrating how a user may use the device of Figure 9;
Figure 10 is plan view of the device illustrated in Figure 10; and
Figure 11 is a view of a second embodiment of a main ring made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 12 is a view of a second embodiment of a hair curling loop made in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 13 is a view of the second embodiment of a hair curling loop of Figure 12 attached to a main ring.
Referring to the drawings, a hair-curling device 1 made in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention comprises a main ring 2, which is substantially toroidal in shape, having a body that is substantially cylindrical in cross-section surrounding a substantially central aperture 3.
Main ring 2 is formed in one piece of an elastic foam ring that is a continuous loop in form, having no free ends. Any suitable elastic material may of course be used.
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate a hair-curling loop 4 with elongate attachment member 5.
Hair-curling loop 4 is formed of a foam loop that is a continuous loop in form, having no free ends, the foam loop being housed within an outer satin sheath. Any appropriate materials may of course be used, such as silk for the sheath.
Attachment member 5 is attached to hair-curling loop 4 in a substantially fixed position. Attachment member 5 comprises two free ends; on a first side of attachment member 5 adjacent a first free end is located a first half of press-stud 6a and on a second side of attachment member 5 adjacent a second free end is located a second half of press-stud 6b.
Free ends of attachment member 5 may be connected together by means of press-stud parts 6a, 6b.
A hair-curling loop 4 is attached to main ring 2 by passing attachment member 5 through aperture 3 of main ring 2 such that attachment member 5 encircles the body of main ring 2 and connecting press-stud parts 6a, 6b together.
Attachment member 5 is of a length such that when it is attached to main ring 2 the body of main ring 2 is snugly housed by attachment member 5 so as to hinder movement of attachment member 5 around main ring 2.
When attached to main ring 2 a hair-curling loop 4 abuts the body of main ring 2. As haircurling loops 4 and main ring 2 are both provided in the form of closed loops it is not possible for them to be joined together such that they intersect. Instead hair-curling loops 4 and main ring 2 may only ever be adjacent to, or abut each other, remaining nonintersecting loops.
As may be seen from Figure 4 a user may attach any desired number of hair curling loops 4 to main ring 2 by means of respective attachment members 5.
Turning to Figures 5 to 7 and an example of the device of the present invention in use, a user may attach as many hair-curling loops 4 as desired to main ring 2. In the example illustrated in Figure 5 to 8 four hair-curling loops 4 are attached to main ring 2.
The user may then position device 1 atop their head such and extend through main ring 2 a length of hair 7 to be curled. The length of hair may then be divided into four approximately equal sections 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d by the user, so as to correspond to the number of hair-curling loops 4 used.
Each section 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d is wound by the user around a respective hair-curling loop 4.
If desired a section of hair may be retained in position on a loop by suitable retention means such as one or more bobby pins. Similarly a loop with hair wrapped around it may held in a substantially fixed position on a user's head by suitable retention means such as one or more bobby pins.
A user may then retire to sleep in comfort owing to the flexible nature of device 1. When device 1 is removed in the morning length of hair 7 will be curled in a fashion dictated by the number of hair-curling rings 4 employed.
Referring to Figures 8 to 10 and a second embodiment of the present invention a hair-curling device 10 may be created using the same main ring 2 with a larger hair-curling loop 8, which is of a size so as to be able to be retained on main ring 2 in a substantially concentric position.
In this embodiment a user may attach a single hair-curling loop 8 to main ring 2 by means to attachment member 9, which is the same as attachment member 5.
Instead of segmenting a length of hair 7 into separate sections a user winds the whole of the length of hair around hair-curling loop 8 and positions hair-curling loop 8 circumferentially around main ring 2 such that main ring 2 and hair-curling loop 8 are substantially concentric.
In some embodiments a substantially toroidal main body may comprise one or more grooves or indentations formed around its outer periphery to aid location of hair curling loop 8 in a circumferential position around main ring 2. An embodiment of such a main body is illustrated in Figure 11 wherein a main body 14 comprises a groove around its periphery.
Although in the present embodiments the two free ends of an attachment member may be connected together by means of a press-stud any other suitable means might of course be used such as hook and loop fastener or a button.
Figure 12 illustrates an alternative embodiment of a hair curling loop, wherein hair curling loop 11 comprises an elongate attachment member 12 that is secured by stitching at a first end to loop 11.
At its free end member 12 comprises a fastening hook 13 configured to hook through aperture 16 located adjacent loop 11 so as to secure loop 11 to a toroidal main body. Figure 13 illustrates hair curling loop 11 attached to main body 2.
Hair curling loops and main rings may of course be provided in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Indeed in other embodiments a main ring need not be circular.
In the present specification the term toroidal is not intended to be limited to a regular torus defined by revolving a circle in three-dimensional space about an axis coplanar with the circle, but is also intended to encompass analogous toroidal shapes such as toroidal polyhedra.
Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
