Description
THERMALLY INSULATING ANCHOR
The present invention relates to structural anchors which can cross an insulated building envelope or substrate without introducing a thermal bridge.
Attaching large features, such as balconies or railings, to a building often requires penetrating the insulated building envelope to ensure sufficient structural support. The fasteners used to secure the feature bridges the insulation and provides a conductive path between the inside and the outside of the building. Typical fasteners such as metal screws and bolts are highly conductive and introduce a significant thermal bridge.
What is needed is a fixing that does not introduce a significant thermal bridge, which provides structural support to a building feature, and which enables straightforward attachment of structural element and/or any required connectors .
The present invention provides a structural anchor, comprising: a thermally insulating shaft formed from a plastics material; and a metal coupling securely fixed to one end of the shaft and comprising a connector for connection to a structural element.
Embodiments of the present invention provide an anchor with an insulating shaft that can pass through an insulating layer without creating a thermal bridge. A coupling securely fixed to the shaft enables structural elements to be connected to and supported by the anchor.
Preferably the plastics material comprises a fibre-reinforced plastics material such as fibreglass. Fibreglass and other fibre-reinforced plastics materials have high tensile strength and a low thermal conductivity.
Preferably, the fibres of the fibre-reinforced plastics material are generally aligned along the length of the shaft. Aligned fibres increase the tensile strength of the shaft and are most easily achieved by forming the shaft by pultrusion.
Advantageously, the shaft is cylindrical and screw-threaded to assist with screwing the anchor into a structure.
Preferably the coupling comprises a ferrule swaged to the shaft. Swaging forms a secure, permanent connection between the shaft and the coupling. Where the shaft is screw-threaded, the connection between the shaft and the coupling is even more secure .
Preferably, the connector comprises an internally screwthreaded nut to enable the connection and a wide range of structural elements.
In one arrangement, the other end of the shaft is provided with a pointed tip to assist with inserting the shaft into a hole in a structure.
In another arrangement, the anchor comprises a second metal coupling securely fixed to the other end of the shaft. In this way, an anchor passed all the way through a structure can have structural elements attached to both ends.
In another aspect, the present invention provides a thermal break comprising a plurality of structural anchors as described above embedded within a thermally insulating material.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 4 is an illustration of a thermal break; and
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of the thermal break of Figure 4.
An insulating fixing 100 is illustrated in Figure 1. The anchor 100 comprises a straight shaft 110 formed from a heatinsulating material capable of supporting high tensile loads. A suitable material is fibre-reinforced plastic, preferably fibreglass, or an aramid, carbon or graphene fibre-reinforced plastic .
The shaft 110 is formed with the fibres generally aligned along the shaft to increase its tensile strength. This can be achieved most conveniently by forming the shaft 110 using a pultrusion process.
The shaft 110 is cylindrical with a screw-threaded surface. Conveniently, the screw-threaded surface can be formed while pultruding the shaft 110.
The diameter of the shaft 110 is typically from 0.5cm to 2cm or even more, depending on requirements. The shaft 110 can be formed and cut to any desired length.
The insulating anchor 100 of Figure 1 has a coupling 120 attached at one end of the shaft 110. The coupling is made from any suitable metal such as galvanised steel or stainless steel. The coupling 120 comprises a cylindrical ferrule or sheath 130 and a connector 140.
The sheath 130 fits around the shaft 110 and is secured to the shaft 110 by swaging or crimping the sheath 130. Preferably at least lOOOkPa of pressure are applied during swaging to create a secure, permanent connection that partially fuses the shaft 110 and the coupling 120 together. Alternatively, or in addition, a chemical bonding agent can be used. The end of the shaft 110 inside the sheath 130 is shown in dotted outlines in Figure 1 for illustration.
The connector 140 enables connection of the anchor 100 to a desired structural element. For example, as illustrated in the Figures, the connector 140 may comprise an internally screwthreaded nut. The connector 140 may alternatively comprise a threaded or unthreaded bolt, a hook, a clamp or any other suitable connector or fastener. Preferably the nut or other connector 140 is of a standard size and shape to enable connection to standard structural elements.
The tip 150 of the shaft 110, at the opposite end of the shaft 110 from the coupling 120, is optionally shaped or cut to form a point. The point aids insertion of the anchor 100 into a hole. The point may be off-centred from the axis of the shaft 110, as illustrated in Figure 1, and is easily formed simply by cutting through the shaft 110 at an angle of approximately 45°. Alternatively, the tip 150 can be shaped, e.g. by grinding, to form a point that is in line with the centre axis of the shaft 110.
In use, a suitably sized hole is drilled into a building or other structure or surface. Preferably, the hole is filled with an adhesive or filler. The tip 150 of the shaft 110 is inserted into the hole and the anchor 100 is screwed into the hole. This may be possible by hand or, where the connector 140 comprises a hexagonal nut for example, using a suitable spanner. Once the adhesive has dried, after 5 to 10 minutes for typical agents, the anchor 100 will be securely in place within the hole and a desired structural element can be attached or bonded to it via the connector 140. In some uses, multiple anchors 100 will be secured to the structure to support large or heavy features.
An alternative anchor 200 is illustrated in Figure 2. This alternative anchor 200 is identical to the anchor 100 of Figure 1 except that a pultruded, screw-threaded, insulating shaft 210 is provided with couplings 120 at both ends. The anchor 200 of Figure 2 is used where the anchor 200 is to be passed all the way through a structure and structural elements are to be attached to both ends.
To better appreciate the range of uses of the present invention, Figure 3 illustrates an anchor 200 to which different structural elements have been connected. The anchor 200 of Figure 3 is identical to the anchor 200 of Figure 2, comprising a shaft 210 having couplings 120 at both ends.
At one end of the anchor 200, a bolt 330 has been screwed into the coupling 120. Flat washers 340 are placed over the bolt 330 and are secured in place with a nut 350.
At the other end of the anchor 200, an adaptor nut 360 has been screwed into the coupling 120 so that a bolt 370 of a different diameter can be secured to the coupling 120. A clamp comprising a rear surface 380 and an aesthetically pleasing front surface 390 are secured to the bolt 370 and can support a desired feature.
In an example use of the anchor 200 of Figure 3, several such anchors 200 could be passed all the way through a wall of a building and the washers 340 secured against an interior wall or batten. The clamp 380, 390 of each anchor 200 on the exterior of the building may receive and support a sheet of glass to create a facing for a Juliet balcony, for example.
It will be recognised that many different combinations of single coupling anchors 100 and double coupling anchors 200 with different attachments may be used. In this way, many different structural elements can be securely anchored to a building, wall or other structure without introducing thermal bridges .
A thermal break 400 incorporating anchors 200 embodying the present invention is illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. Figure 4 is an isometric illustration of the thermal break 400 and Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of the thermal break 400.
The thermal break 400 comprises a plurality of anchors 200 embedded within a load-bearing, thermally insulating material 410. The insulating material may be a resin or a composite material such as the insulating material described in UK Patent Application No. GB2517893. The insulating material 410 is moulded around the anchors 200, fixing them in place, and may be shaped after moulding if desired. Each anchor 200 is preferably contained entirely within the insulating material 410 while still allowing access to the couplings 120.
The anchors 200 can be placed in any desired arrangement and can comprise any desired combination of single-coupling anchors 100 or double-coupling anchors 200. Most usefully the anchors 200 are arranged with their shafts 210 parallel to each other with couplings 120 at each end aligned along two parallel planes, and the insulating material 410 therefore defining two parallel end faces. A plate 420 is provided on each end face, preferably formed from a metal such as galvanised or stainless steel. Each plate 420 has holes which align with the couplings 120 of the embedded anchors 200. Screw-threaded rods or studs 430 are inserted through each hole and are screwed or otherwise fixed to the couplings 120. The opposite end of each stud 430 extends away from the plate 420 to provide an attachment point for any desired structural elements .
A thermal break 400 as described above can be inserted into a cavity made in a building envelope to cross the cavity without forming a thermal bridge. The thermal break 400 offers a structurally sound base for attaching structural elements.
