Abstract

256,567. Furman, E. C. Aug. 6, 1925, [Convention date]. Joint-making packing.-Leaks due to faults or to loose fitting bolts &c. in fluid containers such as pipe lines, steam cylinders, or digesters are repaired without dismantling the container or releasing its internal pressure by injecting into the leak a substance such as a compound of rubber or rubber substitute which will vulcanize under heat, or a substance which hardens by crystallization, chemical action, &c. and which may contain inert material such as cork, sawdust, asbestos. &c., with which may be mixed graphite beeswax, litharge, commercial cement, lubricating oil, glycerine, shellac, or commercial cements. Heat may be applied for vulcanizing or for rendering the sealing medium fluid. the heat for vulcanizing in the case of steam containers being supplied by the steam itself. When the leak communicates with a bolt hole, e.g. in a pipe line or cylinder head the bolt is replaced by a bolt-like injecting member 17, Fig. 4, a channel 22 in which communicates with the leak 16, the outer end of the leak being closed by an adjustable stop 30, which retains the sealing medium in the leak when a handle 26 is turned to apply pressure to the sealing medium. The member 17 may be left in position or may be replaced by the original bolt. If the leak does not communicate with a bolt hole as for example in Fig. 6, a channel 47, 49 is made communicating with a bolt hole, a tool 51, such as shown in Fig. 11, being if necessary used, and a seating device 30 and bolt-like injecting device being used as before. When, as in Figs. 7 and 8, the leak 58 is in a gasket 52 which is situated between two flanges 53 but does not reach to the outer periphery, a closed chamber enclosing a bolt-hole and one end of the leak is formed by a sector 54, Fig. 7, or a flexible element 59, Fig. 8, so that sealing medium can be injected as before, or as an alternative, radial plates 85, Fig. 12, and an arcuate member 87 are employed to form the closed chamber, or as another alternative a flexible member 120, Fig. 16, is forced in as shown by a part 125. In Fig. 9 there is provided a bolt 66, which does not completely fill the bolt hole and a chamber 72 with a plunger 71 clamped or screwed over its outer end for the injection of sealing medium. In the case of a stud bolt 126, Fig. 17, a flexible sealing member 133 is used and an injecting cylinder 127 is clamped in place. In Figs. 14, 15, and 19 the injection is effected without reference to a bolt hole, Fig. 14, referring to a leak in a threaded joint in a pipe line &c. In Fig. 15 contact is made with the outside of the container by a resilient washer 112.
