Acrating. - In treating sewage with activated sludge the sewage is agitated mechanically to give surface aeration and at the same time a small quantity of air under pressure is introduced at a point where the flow of the sewage will cause the air to be deflected from the vertical direction and compelied to take a circuitous path to the surface of the liquid. Sewage in or flowing through the tank 1 is agitated by paddles 4, air being supplied through porous partitions 6. The paddles 4 may be of sieve material.
