Abstract
An inlet metering valve 20 for fuel injection equipment (10, fig 1) of an internal combustion engine has a fuel inlet 44, a spool 36 and an outlet 46, 48. The spool moves between a closed position where the outlet is closed, a first opening position P1 where the outlet is partially open, and a second opening position (P2, fig 3) where the outlet is totally open. The outlet may comprise first and second outlets 46, 48 where only the first outlet is open in the first opening position, and both outlets are open in the second opening position. A magnetic armature moves the spool to the first opening position when a first solenoid is 40 energised, and to the second opening position when a second solenoid 42 is also energised. A high pressure pump includes the valve. A method to control the valve comprises determining the opening position of the valve needed to enable a fuel quantity calculated from torque and power needs of an engine, and is executed by an electronic command unit.
Description
INLET METERING VALVE
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a two stage inlet metering valve of a fuel injection equipment.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The diesel fuel injection equipment of an internal combustion engine comprises a high pressure diesel pump driven by the engine. In said pump, fuel is pressurised in a pumping head wherein is defined a pumping chamber. Fuel is pressurised to several thousands of bars, then it is delivered to a common rail wherefrom it is distributed to fuel injectors.
Unfortunately, such high pressure diesel pumps often suffer a drop in volumetric efficiency due to an inability to fill the pumping chamber at high speeds. This is becoming notably more of a problem with the pumps needing to run at engine speeds of up to 6000 RPM. This problem is made worse with pumps having multiple pumping head. Testing has shown that the biggest restriction is the inlet metering valve (IMV) that aims at limiting the entry quantity of fuel to the quantity just required to fulfill the engine needs. However some of these restrictions cannot be increased (diameter of the holes in the body) as they are needed to have high control accuracy of the flow.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to resolve the above mentioned problems in providing an inlet metering valve for a fuel injection equipment of an internal combustion engine, said valve having a fuel inlet, a spool and an outlet, the spool being adapted to move between a closed position wherein the outlet is closed, a first opening position wherein said outlet is partially open and, a second opening position wherein said outlet is totally open.
Also, said outlet comprises a first outlet and a second outlet and wherein, in the first opening position only the first outlet is open, the second outlet being closed and, in the second opening position both the first and the second outlet are open.
Precisely, the inlet metering valve comprises a body defining the inlet and the outlet, and wherein the spool is guided in a bore, said spool being fixed to a magnetic armature cooperating with a first solenoid that, when being energised attracts the armature and moves the spool in the first opening position.
In a preferred embodiment, the inlet metering valve further comprises a second solenoid arranged so that, when the first solenoid and said second solenoid are both energised the armature is further attracted, the armature moving the spool in the second opening position.
The invention also extends to a high pressure pump of a fuel injection equipment, said pump being provided with an inlet metering valve as described.
The invention also extends to a method to control an inlet metering valve as described to, the method comprising the steps of: - receiving signals relevant to the torque and power needs of an internal combustion engine, - computing said signals to determine the quantity of fuel required to be injected in the cylinders of the engine, - determining the opening position of the inlet metering valve needed to enable said fuel quantity.
The method is also adapted to control an inlet metering valve as per the preferred embodiment wherein the determining step comprises the following substeps: - if the quantity of fuel computed at the computing step is below a first threshold then only energise the first solenoid and; - if the quantity of fuel computed at the computing step is superior to said first threshold then energise both solenoids,.
The invention also extends to an electronic command unit adapted to execute a method as described or in order to control a fuel injection equipment provided with an inlet metering valve.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention is now described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a simplified block diagram of a fuel injection equipment.
Figures 2 and 3 show the inlet metering valve as per the invention represented in two distinct opening stage.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
In reference to the figures is presented a diesel fuel injection equipment 10 controlled by an electronic command unit 12, hereafter ECU 12, receiving requirements signals SR relevant to the engine torque and power requirements and operational signals SO relevant to the operation condition of the fuel injection equipment 10. The ECU 12 computes said signals SR, SO to generate command signals SC sent to the equipment 10.
In said equipment 10 fuel stored in a tank 14 is sucked by a feed pump 16 and flown to a high pressure pump 18 in which an inlet metering valve 20, hereafter IMV 20, receiving command signals SC enables the required fuel quantity to be pressurised in a pumping head 22, the remaining portion of the fuel returning to the tank 14 via a return line Rl. The pressurised fuel is delivered to a common rail 24 that is a reservoir adapted to withstand several thousands of bars and, as a control and safety measure, should the common rail inner pressure measured by a sensor 26 exceeds a predetermined threshold, a valve 28 would open a spill orifice enabling fuel in excess to directly return to the tank 14 via a return line R2. Several fuel injectors 30 connected in parallel to the common rail 24 cyclically spray pressurised fuel into the cylinders of an internal combustion engine, another non-sprayed portion of the fuel being returned to the tank 14 via another return line R3.
The IMV 20 can be an independent component of the equipment 10 or can be integrated to the high pressure pump 18 as it is sketched in figure 1. Whatever the embodiment, said IMV 20, sketched in figures 2 and 3, comprises a body 32 provided with a bore 34 extending along a main axis X and in which is guided a spool valve 36 fixed to a magnetic armature 38 that cooperates with a first solenoid 40 and with a second solenoid 42. Said solenoids 40, 42 coaxially arranged around the bore 34 generate when they are electrically energised magnetic field that attract the magnetic armature 38 and the spool valve 36.
In said bore 34 fuel enters via an inlet 44 defined at an open end of the bore distant from the solenoids and, said fuel exits via a first outlet 46 or via a second outlet 48. Although many embodiments exit, in the represented example both said outlets 46, 48 are radial drillings extending through the body 32 from the bore to the outside. Also, each of said outlets 46, 48 can comprise several drillings.
The first outlet 46 is arranged between the inlet 44 and the second outlet 48 that is axially X the furthest away from the inlet 44.
Furthermore, the IMV 20 defines a return channel 50 comprising an axial drilling extending in the spool valve 36 from an opening on the inlet end and which, at the opposite end is in fluid communication with a return channel.
The valve spool 36 axially extends to an end that selectively opens or closes said outlets as a function of the energisation of the first 40 or second solenoid 42.
More precisely, in operation, the ECU 12 executes a method 100 wherein received signals SR (step 110) are computed (step 120) to generate command signals SC determining (step 130) the spool positioning of the IMV 20. Said command signal precisely determine which of the two solenoids 40, 42 is to be energised.
When none of the solenoids is energized, the valve spool 36 is pushed by a spring, not shown, and it rests in a neutral position wherein both outlets 46, 48 are closed.
When the first solenoid 40 only is energised, the magnetic armature 38 is upwardly attracted (as per the arbitrary orientation of the figure) and the spool 36 moves in a first open position Pl, figure 2, wherein only the first outlet 46 is open, the second outlet 48 remaining closed by the spool valve 36.
When both the first 40 and the second solenoid 42 are energised, the magnetic armature 38 is further upwardly attracted and the spool 36 moves in a second open position P2, figure 3, wherein both the first and the second outlets 46, 48 are open.
Thanks to this arrangement, said IMV 20 has two opening stages, enabling fuel flow in normal engine condition and, eliminating fluid restriction in the fuel flow when the engine runs at high RPM.
