Description

Waste Collection Arrangement
This invention relates to waste collection arrangements. More particularly, but not exclusively, this invention relates to arrangements for collecting animal excrement.
Embodiments of the invention relate to arrangements for collecting dog excrement.
Owners of dogs will recognise the need to deal with dog excrement. Bins are arranged in the streets for owners to dispose of their dog’s excrement while out walking the dog. However, when the dog is in the owner’s garden, dealing with its excrement can be problematic, because there can be no bins nearby in the street.
According to one aspect of this invention, there is provided a waste collection arrangement comprising a first container in which the waste can be disposed, a second container for covering the first container, the second container being configured so that first container can be disposed within the second container, and a waste removal tool for removing waste from the ground and disposing the waste in the first container.
The first container may comprise an inner container. The second container may comprise an outer container. The first container may be received within the second container.
The first container may comprise a holder for holding the waste collection tool thereon. The first container may have a first side wall and the holder may be provided on the first side wall. The holder may comprise a projection on the first side wall. The projection may define a recess for receiving a portion of the waste removal tool therein thereby holding the waste collection tool.
The first container may have an open top via which the waste can be disposed therein.
The first container may comprise a base. The first side wall may extend from the base. The first container may define a first cavity to receive the waste. The first cavity may be defined by the first side wall and the base. The open top may provide communication to the first cavity.
The first container may comprise a first handle. The first handle may be provided on the first side wall. The first handle may be attached to the first side wall at an attachment adjacent the open top. The first handle may extend from the attachment thereof adjacent the open top towards the base. The first handle may be attached to the first side wall adjacent the base. In the embodiment described herein, this allows the first container to be held with the first side wall engaging the ground.
The first container may comprise an upper rim defining the open top of the first container. The first container may include a flange extending outwardly from the upper rim. The flange may extend radially outwardly from the upper rim. The flange may comprise a main portion attached to the side wall, and a downwardly extending portion on the main portion.
The first side wall may have a ground engaging region extending from the base to the upper rim. The ground engaging region may extend substantially perpendicularly from the base. The upper rim may be devoid of the flange at said ground engaging region of the first container side wall.
The ground engaging region of the first side wall may be substantially opposite the first handle. The first side wall may be formed of a resilient flexible material. This provides the advantage in the embodiment described herein that the user can press downwardly on the first handle when the ground engaging region is in engagement with the ground, thereby deforming the ground engaging region to the contours of the ground.
The waste removal tool may comprise a blade portion for picking up the waste. The waste removal tool may comprise a handgrip to allow the tool to be held by a user. The blade portion may be angled at an angle of less than 180° relative to the handgrip.
The blade portion may be angled at an angle of between 120° and 180° relative to the handgrip.
The waste removal tool may include illuminating means for illuminating an area of the ground when used in the dark. The illuminating means may be provided in the handgrip.
The waste removal tool may include engaging formations for engaging the holder. The engaging formations may be provided on the handgrip and may comprise ribs extending from the handgrip. The waste removal tool may comprise two of the engaging formations for receiving the holder therebetween.
The engaging formations may be substantially circular. The engaging formations may extend around the handgrip.
The blade portion may be substantially flat to allow the waste to be picked up from the ground. In one embodiment, the waste removal tool may comprise a trowel.
The second container may be larger than the first container so that, when the second container is disposed over the first container, the second container does not touch the first container. This provides the advantage in the embodiment described herein that the second container is not soiled by any waste on the second container and it keeps the soiled waste removal tool and first container out of sight. The second container may comprise an outer shell.
The second container may comprise an upper substantially flat portion and a second side wall extending from the substantially flat portion. The second container may define a second cavity. The second side wall and the substantially flat portion may define the second cavity. The second side wall may be substantially frustoconical.
The substantially flat portion may extend from an upper region of the second side wall. The second container may have a lower rim defining an open bottom to allow the first container to be received in the second container. The lower rim may engage the ground when the second container is disposed over the first container.
The second container may include a second handle on the upper substantially flat portion. This provides the advantage in the embodiment described herein that the second container can be easily removed from its position covering the first container.
The waste collection arrangement may further include a plurality of linings.
Each lining may comprise a collecting portion. Each lining may further include a pair of attaching portions extending from the collecting portion. Each attaching portion may be in the form of a wing.
The first container may include affixing members. The affixing members may cooperate with the attaching portions to attach the lining to the first container. The affixing members may be provided on the first side wall. The affixing members may comprise lugs.

Figure 8 is a top view of the second container;
Figure 9 is a side view of the second container;
Figure 10 is a front view of the second container; and
Figure 11 is a side elevational view of a lining.
The drawings show a waste collection arrangement 10 that is particularly suitable for collecting waste in the form of animal excrement, such as dog excrement.
The waste collection arrangement 10 comprises first and second containers 12, 14. The first container 12 is in the form of an inner container, and the second container 14 is in the form of an outer container. The second container 14 can be disposed over the first container 12 to cover the first container 12. The waste collection arrangement 10 further includes a waste removal tool 16 for removing waste from the ground and io disposing the waste in the first container 12.
The first container 12 is formed of a flexible plastics material, and comprises a base 18 and a first side wall 20 extending from the base 18. The waste collection arrangement further includes a holder 22 for holding the waste removal tool 16. The holder 22 is attached to the first side wall 20 and comprises a projection 23 defining a recess 24 to receive a portion of the waste removal tool 16, as explained in more detail below.
The first side wall 20 has an upper rim 26 defining an open top 28 providing communication to a first cavity 30. The first cavity 30 is defined by the first side wall and the base 18. A first handle 32 is attached to the first side wall 20 adjacent the open top 28 and extends therefrom towards the base 18 and is further attached to the first side wall 20 adjacent the base 18.
The waste removal tool 16 is attached to the first container 12 by means of a holder 22 which holds the waste removal tool 16. The holder 22 is provided on the first side wall 20.
The holder 22 comprises a projection defining a recess 24. A pair of protrusions 25 are provided on opposite sides of the projection 23, the purpose of which is described below. A pair of affixing members in the form of lugs 34 are also provided on the first side wall 20. The lugs 34 attach a lining 68 to the first container 12, as also described below.
A flange 36 extends radially outwardly from the upper rim 26. The flange 36 includes a main portion 38 attached to the upper rim 26 and a downwardly extending portion 40 on the upper rim 26.
The first side wall 20 includes a ground engaging region 42 opposite the first handle 32. The upper rim 26 is devoid of the flange 36 across said ground engaging region 42. Thus, in use, the first container 12 is arranged on the ground with the ground engaging region 42 in engagement with the ground. The lack of the flange 36 across the ground engaging region 42 allows the ground engaging region 42 to engage the io ground wholly from the base 18 to the upper rim 26. In addition, the flexible nature of the material from which the first container 12 is formed allows the ground engaging region 42 to deform to match the contours of the ground engaged thereby.
The second container 14 comprises an upper substantially flat portion 44 and a substantially frustoconical second side wall 46 extending downwardly from the substantially flat portion 44. A second cavity 47 is defined by the second side wall 46 and the upper substantially flat portion 44. The substantially flat portion 44 extends from an upper region of the second side wall 46.
The second side wall 46 has a lower rim 48 defining an open bottom 50 to provide communication to the second cavity 47, and to allow the first container 12 to be received in the second cavity 47.
The second container 14 is larger than the first container 12 to the extent that the second container 14 does not touch the first container 12, when the second container 14 is disposed over the first container 12 with the first container 12 received in the second cavity 47.
The second container 14 includes a second handle 52 on the upper substantially flat portion 44 to allow the second container 14 to be lifted from, and disposed over, the first container 12.
The waste removal tool 16 comprises a blade portion 54 for picking up the waste and a handgrip 56 to allow the tool 16 to be held by a user. Illuminating means 58, in the form of a bulb, such as an LED bulb, is provided in the handgrip 56 for illuminating an area of the ground when used in the dark. The handgrip 56 includes a suitable housing 60 portion for receiving batteries to power the illuminating means 58, and a button to switch the illuminating means 58 on and off.
The waste removal tool 16 may be held by the holder 22 on the first container 12 when not in use. The waste removal tool 16 includes engaging formations for engaging the holder 22. The engaging formations are provided on the handgrip 56 and comprise a pair of circular ribs 64 extending from the handgrip 56. The waste removal tool 16 is io arranged on the holder 22 with a region 66 of the handgrip 56 between the ribs 64 received in the recess 24. When so received in the recess 24, the ribs 64 engage the protrusions 25.
The blade portion 54 is substantially flat to allow the waste to be picked up from the ground and deposited in the first container 12.
The waste collection arrangement 10 may further include the lining 68 (shown in Figure 11 and in broken lines in Figures 1 and 2). The lining 68 is in the form of a bag for lining the first container 12. The lining 68 comprises a collecting portion 69 in which the waste can be collected. The collecting portion 69 is disposed in the first cavity 30 and is therefore, not visible in Figures 1 and 2. The collecting portion 69 is substantially the size and shape of the first cavity 30.
The lining 68 further includes a pair of oppositely arranged attaching portions 70 extending from the collecting portion 69. The attaching portions 70 are substantially triangular in shape and is in the form of a wing portion. Each attaching portion 70 has a cooperating formation for cooperating with a respective one of the lugs 34. Each cooperating formation is in the form of an aperture 72 defined by the respective attaching portion 70. The apertures 72 receive the lugs 34 therethrough to attach the lining 68 to the first container 12.
The collecting portion 69 has an opening 69A between the attaching portions 70 to allow the waste to be deposited in the collecting portion 69. The lugs 34 are disposed close to the first handle 32, and away from the ground engaging portion 42. This ensures that when the attaching portions 70 are attached to the lugs 34, the attaching portions 70 are held away from the opening, thereby reducing the risk that the attaching portions 70 will become soiled by waste being deposited in the collecting portion 69.
In order to facilitate attaching the attaching portions 70 to the lugs 34. Each attaching portion 70 has a substantially straight edge 76 and a concavely curved edge 78. The straight edge 76 is longer than the curved edge 78. In addition, the curved edges 78 of each attaching portion 70 extend to one another so that, together, they define a io recessed region 80 (see Figure 2).
It will be appreciated that the lining 68 may be one of a plurality of linings 68 supplied together in a pack, the user providing a fresh lining 68 whenever one of the linings 68 has been used.
In use, one of the linings 68 is disposed so that the collecting portion 69 is received in the cavity 30 of the first container 12, and the attaching portions 70 are attached to the lugs 34. The waste removal tool 16 is attached to the first container 12 by being held by the holder 22. The first container 12 is disposed in an upright position on the ground, and the second container 14 is disposed over the first container 12 to cover the first container 12 and the waste removal tool 16.
When it is intended to collect waste, such as dog excrement, the user removes the second container 14 and lifts the first container 12 using the first handle 32. The user then detaches the waste removal tool 16 from the holder 22.
The first container 12 is arranged adjacent the waste to be removed in a position in which the ground engaging region 42 engages the ground. When so positioned, the use presses downwardly on the first handle 32 to cause the first container 12 to deform to the contours of the ground beneath the ground engaging region 42. The user then passes the blade portion 54 of the waste removal tool 16 under the waste and either lifts the waste and deposits it in collecting portion 69 of the lining 68 in the first cavity 30, or flicks the waste directly from the ground into the collecting portion 69.
The waste removal tool 16 can then be re-engaged with the holder 22, the user may wish to wipe or wash the waste removal tool 16 prior to mounting it on the holder 22.
The first container 12 can then be returned to the second container 14 and disposed in its upright position on the ground and the second container 14 disposed over the first container 12, thereby covering the first container 12. After use or several uses, the lining 68 can be removed from the first container 12, and the attaching portions 70 tied together to seal the opening of the lining 68 closed.
io There is thus described a waste removal arrangement 10 for removing waste, such as animal excrement, efficiently and easily from a garden or other places where people visit.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
