Abstract

256,271. Ges. fur Linde's Eismaschinen Akt.-Ges. July 31, 1925,. [Convention date]. Cooling gases by direct contact with cooling-medium.-In a process for the liquefaction or purification of gases heat is exchanged between the compressed gas and the expanded gas by means of a liquid circulating in a closed cycle. Compressed gas, e.g. ethylene, at the temperature of cooling-water enters a cooler A at a, and is then passed through an expansion valve V. The gas is in part liquefied and the unliquefied part passes into the column B. Toluol is supplied from a tank E to a pump P and thence to the column A where it cools the compressed ethylene. The toluol then passes, still as liquid, through a throttle valve D to the top of the column B, where it is re-cooled by the out-flowing low-pressure ethylene, and flows back to the pump P. A modified system is described in which part of the liquid is interrupted at an intermediate point in the column A and returned to an intermediate point in the column B. The application of the process to the separation of air into oxygen and nitrogen is described. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the applcation of the process to the exchange of heat between gases generally. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
