Abstract

255,753. Atkinson, J. S., and Stein & Atkinson, Ltd. Feb. 22, 1926. Grates; furnace fireplaces.-Relates to furnaces having a rotary fuel container. Between the rotary container or hearth and the combustion chamber (which, in the example described, is the flue 12 of a Lancashire boiler) is positioned a fuel dam or bridge 15, whose upper face Fig. 5, is inclined at substantially the angle assumed by the fuel bed. Fuel is supplied through the front face of the dam into the fuel bed, the fuel outlet being in a portion 15<c> set back with respect to the remainder 15b which is somewhat inclined, as shown in plan in Fig. 7. The fuel duct 44, supplied by a pusher 45, extends through a passage 46 in the fuel dam, open at both ends to permit of air circulation for cooling. The rotary hearth is composed of segmental fire-bars 31 spaced from an outer casing 30 so as to form an air-heating jacket. Heat-exchange ribs are provided on the fire-bars, some of them 33, forming the spacing members. Two rings of perforations 36 in the casing 30 admit air to the jacket from trunks 37 admission being confined to the portions of the jacket covered with fuel by stoppers 39. The two hearths, rotating in opposite directions, are mounted by supporting and positioning rollers 19, 20 on a carriage 16 movable in relation to the boiler front and the fuel dam is mounted on the carriage or, as shown, on the boiler front. An ash-pit 41 is provided at the lower end of the hearth.
