Abstract

255,477. Flintkote Co., (Assignees of Rahr, C. E., and Drake, R. E.). July 16, 1925, [Convention date]. Compound or composite tiles; roofing tiles.-Sheet material for roofing comprising a base of felt or similar material and a facing of granular material has a metallic coating applied to the base in the interstices of the granular facing. The base 1, Fig. 3, is saturated with waterproofing material such as asphalt, and coated with a layer 3 preferably of an asphalt of high melting point. Over this is applied a layer of granular material 5 such as crushed slate which is rolled into the coating 3 while the latter is soft. The metal coating 6 is applied by electrodeposition, a conductive layer of graphite or powdered metal being applied to the coating 3 by brushing or dusting, followed by washing to remove the conductive powder from the granular material while leaving that adhering to the coating 3. In another method, granular surfaced roofing of ordinary type is coated with an asphaltic emulsion and dusted with metal powder or graphite. After drying, the powder on the granular particles is washed off, and the metal deposited on the powder remaining between the particles. In a modification, a thick emulsion is used and allowed partially to dry, after which it is washed so that the emulsion is removed from the tops of the particles, and the metal powder dusted on. The metal powder or graphite may be applied to the asphalt coated fabric before the granular material is applied, and in some cases a thin film of metal may be deposited before the application of the granular material, the metal coating being subsequently completed. The granular material and the metal powder or graphite may be mixed and applied together. Alternatively an asphalt emulsion may be applied to a granular coated base, and a solvent used to clean the tops of the particles and to render the asphalt in the spaces tacky, after which the metal powder is dusted on. Graphite may be applied by means of graphited water which is allowed to dry on the coated material. The deposition of metal may be limited to those parts of the material which are exposed in use. In the case of the roof shingle shown in Fig. 1, with cut-out indentations, the lower part is covered with metal, and metalcovered parts extend upwardly where the cut-out parts of the shingle in the course above occur when in position.
