A Carrier and a Blank Therefor
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a carrier and a blank therefor and in particular to a carrier that can be folded between a substantially flat collapsed configuration and an erected operative configuration and to a blank for forming such carrier.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Take away meals, in particular Chinese meals, are typically served to the customer in lidded plastic cartons which are typically placed into a plastic carrier bag before handing to the customer. A problem with the use of carrier bags to carry such meals is that the food cartons, typically stacked on top of one another within the bag, may topple over in transit, for example when carried in a car, leading to spillages.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved carrier for carrying take away meals which facilitates carrying of cartons of food with enhanced stability, reducing the risks of spillage. The carrier of the invention may also be used for carrying many other objects.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a carrier made from a single folded blank, the carrier comprising: a bottom panel having a substantially rectangular perimeter defined by opposing side fold lines and opposing end fold lines, a respective side wall panel extending upwardly from each side fold line and a respective end wall panel extending upwardly from each end fold line; the bottom panel, side wall panels and end wall panels being connected together to form an open topped container for holding food items; each end wall panel having a lateral width greater than that of the base panel such that lateral side regions of each end wall panel extend beyond the side wall panels to define laterally extending support legs upon which the carrier may rest to provide enhanced lateral stability for the carrier and its contents.

Each end wall panel 8,10 is laterally wider than the base panel 2 of the carrier 1 such the the lateral sides of each end wall panel 8,10 define laterally extending support legs 12, providing enhanced lateral stability for the carrier 1 and its contents.
Planar handle portions 14,16 extend from an upper end of each side wall panel, said handle portions incorporating apertures 18 which can be aligned with one another so that the handle portions define an integral carrying handle.
Figure 3 shows a single sheet blank 20, preferably formed from a suitable paperboard, having a plurality of crease lines and cut outs, for forming the carrier 1 of Figure 1.
The blank 20 comprises a central rectangular array of fold lines 22,24,26,28 defining a perimeter of the base panel 2 of the carrier 1. Regions of the blank defining the first and second side wall panels 4,6 are provided on either side of the base panel 2, separated from the base panel by opposing fold lines 22,26. Regions of the blank 20 defining the first and second end wall panels 8,10 are provided at either end of the base panel 2, separated from the base panel 2 by opposing fold lines 24,28. The handle portions 14,16 of the carrier 1 extend outwardly from each side wall panel 4,6, separated therefrom by further fold lines 30,32.
Each side wall panel 4,6 includes a pair of connection portions 34,36,38,40 defined at the lateral sides of each side wall panel 4,6 for connecting the side wall panels 4,6 to the end wall panels 8,10. Each connection portion 34,36,38,40 is connected to the remainder of the respective side wall panel via a respective fold line 42 preferably extending at an angle of 45 ° to the adjcent side of the base panel 2 and extending from a respective corner of the base panel 2. The fold lines 42 terminate approximately midway across the side wall panels 4,8 (in a direction away from the base panel 2). A diagonal slot 44 separates each connection portion 34,36,38,40 from the remainder of the respective side wall panel 4,6, said slot 44 extending from an upper end of the respective fold line 42 outwardly towards the adjacent outer corner of the respective side wall panel 4,6, each slot 44 terminating at upper edge of the respective side wall panel 4,6, such that each connection portion 34,36,38,40 can be folded about its fold line 42 to overly the remainder of the respective side wall panel 4,6, with an outer lateral edge of the respective connection portion 34,36,38,40 substantially aligned with the fold line 22,26 between the respective side wall panel 4,6 and the base panel 2, as shown in Figure 4. A laterally extending connection tab 46 extends from an upper region of each connection portion 34,36,38,40, said connection tab 46 being arranged to overly the base portion 2 when the respective connection portion 34,36,38,40 is folded to overly the remainder of the resepctive side wall panel 4,6, again as can be seen in Figure 4, each connection tab 46 being adapted to be secured to a respective end wall panel of the carrier 1 by means of a suitable adhesive to join the side wall panels to the end wall panels of the carrier 1.
Each end wall panel 8,10 may have a lateral width approximately twice that of the base panel 2 such that lateral side regions of each end wall panel 8,10 extend beyond the base panel 2 to define said support legs 12 of the carrier 1 when it is in its erected operative configuration.
Securing tabs 48 are formed adjacent the outermost corners of each each end wall panel 8,10, said securing tabs 48 being connected to the remainder of the respective end wall panel 8,10 via a respective fold line 50 extending perpendicular to the adjacent outer edge 52 of the blank and separated from the remainder of the end wall panel 8,10 via a slot 54 extending inwardly from an outer side of the respective end wall panel 8,10 in a direction substantially parallel to said outer edge 52 of the blank 20.
To form the blank of Figure 3 into the carrier of Figure 1, first the connection portions 34,36,38,40 of each side wall panel 4,6 are folded such that the connection tabs 46 thereof extend over the base panel 2, as shown in Figure 4.
Next the end wall panels 8,10 are folded to overly the base panel 2, as shown in Figure 5. Suitable adhsive is used to secure the overlapping regions of the connection tabs 46 of the connection portions 34,36,38,40 and the respective end wall panels 8,10 together and to secure overlapping regions of the securing tabs 48 of the end wall panels 8,10 and the respective connection portions 34,36,38,40 of the side wall panels 4,6 together, resulting in the formation of the carrier in its folded configuration as shown in Figure 5. It should be noted that the length of the securing tabs 48 are such that the securing tabs 48 extend laterally beyond the edges of the respective connection portions 34,36,38,40, as can be seen in Figure 5. This enables the securing tabs 48 to secure the carrier in its erected operative configuration, as will be described below.
To bring the carrier 1 into its erected operative configuration, for use, the end wall panels 8,10 are raised upwardly and outwardly away from the base panel 2, unfolding the connection portions 34,36,38,40 of the side wall panels 4,6 and thus simultaneously raising the side wall panels 4,6, until, as shown in Figure 1, the securing tabs 48 of the end wall panels 8,10 can be received on an outer face of the side wall portions 4,6, the securing tabs 48 extending through the slots 44 between the connection portions 34,36,38,40 of the side walls panels 4,6 and the remainder of the side wall panels 4,6, to retain the carrier 1 in its erected operative configuration, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Once one or more objects have been placed into the carrier 1, the handle portions 14,16 can be raised and brought together, with the apertures 18 in alignment, to facilitate carrying of the carrier 1 and its contents. Securing means, such as suitable adhesive or hook and loop fasteners, may be provided for securing the handle portions 14,16 together.
In such erected operative configuration, the laterally extending support legs 12 of the end wall panels 8,10 provide enhanced lateral stability for the carrier 1 and its contents, for example when the carrier 1 is placed on the floor of a moving vehicle.
As shown in the drawings, the handles portions may be sculpted or shaped, for example defining a gap to one lateral side of the handle portions, to allow tall containers to be carried, with the handle portions to one side of such container.
In an alternative embodiment the handle portions 14,16 may be omitted such that the container defines an open topped tray.
The carrier in accordance with the embodiment shown in the drawings may be particularly suitable for carrying cartons of take away food. However, it is envisaged that a carrier in accordance with the present invention may be used for carrying numerous other objects, such as drink bottles / containers or indeed other items that may need carried.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment(s) described herein but can be amended or modified without departing from the scope of the present invention.
