Description

EDGE PIECE
FIELD
The invention relates to an edge piece. Particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to an edge piece for use on a lawn or a grass verge.
BACKGROUND
In the maintenance of a garden or an area where there are large amounts of turf, substantial time is taken in maintaining the turf and performing duties such as cutting the turf to prevent it growing to undesirable levels and feeding the turf with nutrients required to maintain its colour and aesthetic appeal.
Where large amounts of turf have become more and more complex in arrangement, in the construction, say, of championship golf-courses or of ornamental gardens, the geometry of the turf has become even more complex and the time taken to maintain such complex geometries of turf has increased as particular attention needs to be paid to regions where the gradient of the turf changes dramatically.
Aspects and embodiments were conceived with the foregoing in mind.
SUMMARY
Viewed from a first aspect there is provided an edge piece comprising a section of artificial turf disposed upon a resiliently flexible backing member.
An edge piece according to the first aspect can be used as part of an area of turf and does not require any maintenance as the appearance of the section of artificial turf does not change in time due to environmental factors such as sunlight and surrounding moisture levels.
Sections of artificial turf do not require the level of maintenance required by natural turf and therefore an edge piece comprising such a section of artificial turf can form part of a complex turf arrangement where an edge can be formed between two or more adjacent sections of natural turf without the time and expense that is incurred due to the maintenance of real turf.
The resilient flexible backing member enables the edge piece to be manipulated according to the desired use.
The resilient flexible backing member may be made from any flexible material such as, for example, an elastomeric foam.
The resilient flexible backing member may comprise a section of polyethylene foam, or foam rubber.
The use of materials such as elastomeric foam, polyethylene foam and foam rubber provide a flexible backing member that is easy to use, easy to make and easy to manipulate.
The section of artificial turf and the backing member may be arc shaped in that they may have a profile that is semi-circular or quarter-circular in section.
The effect of this is that rounded edges can be provided between two or more adjacent regions of natural turf. Such rounded edges do not require the same level of maintenance as the regions of natural turf but still provide the aesthetic appeal associated with the adjacent regions of natural turf.
The backing member may comprise a section of insulative material. The insulative material can be used as insulative protection for material positioned underneath the edge piece. The insulative material is particularly effective as it helps to maintain the temperature of the underlying material which may be a pipe, say, or other installation.
The insulative material may comprise a section of, for example, mineral wool, glass wool, flexible elastomeric foam, rigid foam, polyethylene, cellular glass or aerogel. Such materials will reduce the potential for condensation formation on an underlying pipe and thus reduces the potential for corrosion of those pipes.
The edge piece may further comprise attachment means such as, for example, a plurality of screws, which can be used to couple to the edge piece to an underlying surface.
An embodiment in accordance with the first aspect will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 schematically illustrates a cross-sectional view of an edge piece in accordance with the embodiment,
Figure 1 schematically illustrates a cross-sectional view of an edge piece 100 according to the embodiment. Edge piece 100 comprises a section of artificial turf 102 adhesively attached to an elastomeric foam substrate 104 which is arc shaped. The elastomeric foam substrate 104 forms a backing member for the section of artificial turf 104 This causes the section of artificial turf 102 to also form an arc shape in profile.
Edge piece 100 is positioned between adjacent sections of natural turf 106a and 106b and, due to its arc-shape, provides a smooth edge between the two adjacent sections of natural turf 106a and 106b. Edge piece 100 and the sections of natural turf 106a and 106b form part of a grass verge which requires regular maintenance.
The edge piece 100 is attached to natural turf section 106b by way of a pin 108 which is driven through artificial turf section 102 and foam substrate 104 into the natural turf section 106b.
During maintenance, the two adjacent sections of natural turf 106a and 106b can be easily maintained with standard gardening equipment but the edge portion, which if made from natural turf can be difficult to maintain, requires no regular maintenance.
