Abstract

254,025. Ellson, B. E. March 30,1925. Planing.-Epicyclic reversing-gearing for actuating reciprocating parts in planing-machines &c. is controlled automatically from the machine through three or more brakes, in order to produce definite pauses at the end of one or of each stroke. Thus a winding-drum B, Fig. 14, is driven from a motor M in one way or the other according to which of two brakes indicated at X, Z is applied to elements S<2> and R of an epicyclic train. A third brake Y is for arresting the drum during reversal, and providing the pause. The brakes are applied in proper sequence by means such as cams U, V, W, Fig. 15, upon a shaft G, which is rocked. A screwed rod Q, Fig. 16, driven from the drum through constant gearing N carries travelling nuts O<1>, O<2>. A throw-over weight O<6> is carried by a lever O<5> which can turn loosely upon the shaft G, and actuates the shaft G with lost motion in either direction through a lug J extending between two levers H secured at an angle upon the shaft. Integral with the lever O<5> are levers O<3>, O<4> which are struck alternately by the nuts O<1>. O<2> to effect reversal by releasing one of the brakes X, Z and applying the other. As lever O<5> passes from position IV to position V, or from position III to position II, the brake F alone is applied to the drum directly. The required pause is effected by stopping the lever O<5> in its descent at positions V and II, and this may be done by a device like a clock escapement comprising a three-armed lever O<9> controlled by vanes A'. A quick-throw over linkage adapted to apply the brakes in the order XYZYX is shown in Fig. 10. Forms of epicyclic reversing-gear other than that shown in Fig. 14 are described, all operated by the two brakes X, Z. Some of these have double or stepped planetary gears, some have treble planetary gears, and in some there are separate gear trains.
